Hey guys,

I got a real rookie question here. I have a 95 GT HO and a mechanic told me there is a difference between my engine and the regular GT. What exactley makes mine an HO (high output), in comparison to a regular 5.0, or is this guy full of crap!?

Well, there's the HO (high output) 5.0, and the "SO" (standard output) motor. In 1995, the SO engine was never put in the Mustang.

The mechanic is confused.

All 5.0 Mustangs, including '95 GT's, have the H.O. (High Output) 5.0 V-8 engine. No exceptions. No 'special' engines, either. It's a myth.

The Crown Victorias and other Ford cars and trucks with the 5.0 have V-8 engines that are not High Output due to different cams, exhaust, intakes, etc.

That's probably where your mechanic friend got mixed-up. Trust me, your '95 5.0 has the exact same 5.0 engine every other Mustang had that year.

The H.O. motor also has a different firing order from non-H.O motors, therefore a different crank, etc.

Typically through the years the HO 5.0L engines had Double Roller timing chains as opposed to the silent gear type, The 351W engine firing order (early models basically had the 351 camshaft because of increased lift/duration), Stock headers in the mid 80's up, higher flowing intake manifold, HO's had forged pistons from the mid 80's until '92) and '87 up they had the E7TE heads like the trucks that flowed better than the passanger "high swirl" E6TE heads (E6TE used in mustangs in '86). Also, in the early-mid 80's the HO's had serpentine belt driven accesories with a reverse rotation water pump as opposed to standard belts and rotation water pump. The HO's also always had higher flowing air filter housings. Also the HO's got a roller camshaft in '86 whereas the regular line i believe (not absolutely certain held on until later). The crankshaft is the same as other models, just a regular cast crankshaft and the rods are the same as well. A double sump pan was used for crossmember clearance.
I believe this just about covers the basics :D

The firing order is different, but the crank itself is the same.

The 5.0 in the Cobra is different, could he be thinking of that?

Good point and one that I overlooked, as I assumed seeing the car in question was a GT the mechanic would know the difference between the Cobra and the GT.

Possibly not and that would account for the apparent onfusion here over what Mustang had what 5.0 engine.

It was the only thing that I could think of.

Sometimes you think these people would know the difference, but I've come across lots of people who should know and don't.

I've even had mechanics tell me that the 4.6L started in 1994 with the new body style! I think this guy was largely a Chevy fan though.
