Another belt length question.
I am going to take off my smog pump tomorrow (new h-pipe) and I am trying to find the right belt length for a 92LX5.0 with stock pulleys. I did a search but most everyone that stated a size had pulleys. I had a lot of trouble with my battery going dead on my last mustang (87) that had pulleys so I don't want to go that route. Before I remove the pump couldn't I just go to the parts store and try a few and give back the ones that don't fit? Is there anything else I need? I am practicing the 6 P's
Thanks in advance.... |
Finally, I can help someone. I have a 92 gt with pulleys, but I have an alternator bracket so I retained the stock belt size. I bypassed the smog pump last week with an 84.9 inch 6 groove S belt. The tensioner will hang almost to its limit, but the belt is still tensioned well. I looked for an 84.5 which was recommended, but no one down here had one. There's a link to show how to route the belt. I'll try to find it and repost it. Hope I've finally helped someone.

take a string, wrap it the around the pulleys as the belt will go, w/o using the tensioner. that should put you within a 1/2 inch. and yes, you can switch them in the parking lot of your parts store till you get the right one. usually two tries to get it right in my experience.

You can run a shorter belt and retain the pump if you would prefer.
