Vacumn Lines, again...
 

I put my engine back into my car this weekend finally, but I still can't figure out how the vacumn lines attach. If anyone can take a picture of their vacumn lines or post a link as to how they attach to the car I'd appreciate it. I bought a Chilton's and a Haynes and neither have a detailed diagram, nor do they have adequete pictures. I have a friend who insists I need an 89 diagram for my vacumn lines, so if anyone knows of a link to one I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Keith

I was hoping you would respond PKRWUD, thanks. Ok, I hope nobody rips me a new one, but what are calibration codes? I have both a Chilton's and a Haynes manual, but neither tell me where the vaccumn lines attach to the engine. I don't know what the calibration codes are, but if you tell me what they are, I could look them up in one of my manuals. Also, if I take a picture of what the engine looks like while it's in the car, will that help? Thanks in advance for the help!! -Keith

BTW: I went to Ford to see if they can tell me where the vaccumn lines attach, and they couldn't tell me. I looked through their Helm manual, and couldn't find any vaccumn line diagrams.

I've narrowed it down to 2 possibles. It would be printed on one of your emission decals, under the hood, and would be either:

8-21P-R10

or

7-21A-R05

If you can't find those numbers, do you know if it was originally a California car?

That would tell me too.

I'll start working on a copy of the two possibilities, with translations for you.

I actually don't have any decals on the underside of my hood. I have a fiberglass cowl induction hood. I am 99% sure it was a california car to begin with. It is Mass Air, not speed density. I don't actually have the car at my house, otherwise I'd go outside and look at it, but if you need to know anything that's actually printed on the car, I'd have to wait until this evening. Thanks you for your help, I REALLY appreciate it!!!!

This is exactly what I was looking for Chris, thank you very much!! I really appreciate you taking the time to track down info for me and explaining it in Layman's terms, lol. I put my engine back into my stang last weekend and this is (hopefully) the last piece to the puzzle. I'll try to hook up my vacumn lines this weekend and hopefully I'll be stomping on those damn, weak camaros again. Thanks for everyone's help here, Keith

Yeah, that took me a few extra minutes, but I figure since you're in Costa Mesa, I might actually get a beer out of you some day. :)

No one knows all of them. They change every year, and through the early 1990's, there were up to 20 different ones for the same size engine. I pulled that one out of my 1988 Mitchell Engine Performance Service & Repair Manual. Check out the next two pics. The first one shows just how many different vacuum charts there were just for the 5.0 in 1988.

And this pic shows you the manual. Actually, this is two years combined into one binder. It has the 1988 manuals and the 1989 manuals.

That calibration code your looking for is on a small white sticker right by the door close bolt or just below it, either side.

You're right, there are all kinds of different vacumn diagrams. Thanks for your help, like I said, I really appreciate it. In a few weekends I'll head up to Ventura and buy you some beer, :) , and maybe you could look over my mustang, see what you think of it. :D Thanks to GTSR515 also, I didn't realize the calibration codes where on the door. With all the information I learn here on this site, I should know my car inside and out, within a few months. Chris, is that manual (Mitchell) available for sale to anyone, or just to mechanic shops? If they are available to anyone, where did you get it, and how much? Thanks!

Mitchell used to sell them to anyone who asked, but only shops could afford them. They are sold in sets, and weren't cheap. Over the years, shops get new ones, or like everyone else now, have gone to CD's, and sell their manuals to whoever asks. There used to be a place here in Ventura called Pacific Motorbooks, and all they did was go around So Cal and buy up used manuals from shops, and then resold them to the public. I have 8 or 10 different Mitchell series, and the most I paid was $30 (for the 1990 series).
Unfortunately, Pacific Motor books was asked to sell a hot rod on consignment once, and they made so much money, that became their primary business. The last time I went there looking, they were all gone. He said some guy from Orange County came up and bought every single book he had (thousands).
