Good Car Movies?

Hey, Hey All. Acouple of my friends and I usually try to get together on the weekend to rent a car movie to watch but we're starting to run out good car movies. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good car movies that they've seen. We've seen alot of the more well known ones. I know American Graphiti is on the list to be rented soon/next (Merc reminded me to post this thread about talking about domestic rice and such), well I would like to just know of any good ones.

Take Care,
§am.

Cool Car Flicks

Sam:

Sorry this is too late for this weekend but here's a listing of my favorite 'car' films for future consideration.

In no particular order:

Bullitt 1968

Steve McQueen and a '67 Mustang fastback with a 390 and a four-speed.

Slow build-up to the best chase scene of all time, in most everyone's opinion, including mine.

McQueen was the guy I wanted to grow up to be when I was a kid. Very cool, no BS guy with a great car, a tough job (but a supportive boss) and a fantastic, understanding girlfriend.

Must see.

Available on DVD & VHS.

Two Lane Blacktop. (1971)

12-second '55 Chevy with a 454 and dual-quad tunnel-ram set-up races a '70 GTO and other assorted hot cars. Bad acting by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, singer James Taylor and Laurie Bird .

Ms. Bird and Mr. Wilson are dead. Taylor is alive but bald. Draw your own conclusions.

Vanishing Point. (1971)

Barry Newman goes cross country in a big block white, '70 Challenger. Gritty and sometimes confusing.

Think of it as a existential chase movie.

Hard to find on rental video.

American Graffiti (1973).

Ron Howard (with hair), Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams and a lot of cool '50's cars including a very sharp '58 Impala (Ron Howard's ride) and a much modified '32 Ford driven by 'John Milner' (Paul LeMat), the local drag racing hero. A very young Harrison Ford appears near the end as Milner's main challenger in a nice '55 Chevy. Great drag race.

Four-star film (by George Lucas) that recalls teen life in medium-sized towns pre-1963. Too much plot to list. Must see. DVD & VHS.

Gone in 60 Seconds. 2000.

Nick Cage and a modified '67 Mustang Shelby GT 350 star but lots of other beautiful, fast cars appear. Oh yeah, Angelina Jolie is in it, too.

Great movie, very exciting. Easy to find on DVD and VHS.

Others to consider:

Ronin (Robert DeNiro)

The French Connection (Gene Hackman)

The Road Warrior (Mel Gibson).

Smokey and the Bandit (Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason)

All contain extensive car-chase scenes and are worthy of your time.

Enjoy!

Mr 5 0 05-19-2002 02:55 PM

'58 was a very good year

Sorry guys, it was a 1958 Plymouth Sport Fury. I read the book and I've seen the movie quite a few times.

I know they used both a '57 and about ten different '58 Plymouth Fury's in the film. The '57 had the 318 dual-quad engine but the '58 had a (one-year-only) 350 cu. in. dual-quad set-up. All the '58 Fury's were actually beige but the one in the film is painted red and white, for effect. After all, a 'Satan car' wouldn't be beige! The interior is customized for the film, not what '58's came with. Hey; it's only a movie.

Cool film (teenage nerd gets revenge on everyone via his satanic car) and the Plymouth self-repaired! Man vs machine ending. Gotta see it.

Crazy Horse GT 05-19-2002 03:01 PM

doh! ok mr 5.0 it was a 58, they look so much alike, wish my car would fix it's self, it would save me a lot of money, heheh.

I would have to say that THE BEST car movie that I've ever seen is the original 1973 version of "Gone In 60 Seconds". It's the only car chase that I know of that could compare to the chase in "Bullitt". It has one SWEET 73 Mach 1 Mustang in it, and the chase lasts like 45 minutes. Watched it with my friends, and had a great time. Remember to get the one made in 73, not the one that was made a couple years ago with the 67 GT500 in it.

"Born to Run" is an Ok car movie, but there ain't much action in it. The main car is a 1970 Mustang that gets set on fire, and that's why I didn't like it very much.

I heard of some movie called "All Revved Up". I haven't seen it, but it might be worth checking out. :D

nah man, I ain't bustin ya, i'm jus tellin ya what's in the script from blade 1. maybe they coudn't find a cutlass in between the writing of the script and filming. i'm not too keen on old Gm's, but the a-pillar window looks reminiscent of the olds 442 hursts, bout 68-69ish. hell it could be a frankenstein car made of an old cutlass, a front end off a charger, god knows what else and a big *** Summitt racing hood scoop, its still a bad as car regardless of what it is. but i'm not rally sure cause i'm a ford guy :D. I haven't seen blade 2 yet, did they change cars?... plus I think they wanted the car to be a "Cutlass" because he's "blade", ya know, typical cliche movie irony, anyway here's my claim:

http://www.un-official.com/The_Daily_Script/Blade.txt

Blade places a hand on her shoulder, another around her elbow and
without any consideration to discomfort -CRACK!- brutally pops it
back in place. Karen SCREAMS again as he scoops her up once more and
heads for --

HIS '69 OLDSMOBILE 442,

which is parked nearby. Midnight-black. The definitive high-
performance heavy-metal muscle machine with an engine big enough to
power an Apollo rocket.

thbbbbt!! :p

j/k :D

blue00gt 05-20-2002 05:42 PM

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry has a cool green Charger that gets chased all over the place by the cops. I think Peter Fonda is in that one.

The Fireman 05-20-2002 05:54 PM

Yeah they had the same car in "Blade 2". It was only in it for like a few seconds, and they didn't even have a car chase with it. :( I saw a story in a mopar magazine about that car, and it's a 68 charger. Once again I don't wanna be a pain. :D
