PLEASE READ, # 1,3,8 pistons black

i removed my heads tonight and saw that a few of the pistons were very gummy and black, what is this from? lately i've been having coolant problems and the plugs were getting a little wet, could is it just carbon buildup from the plugs getting ruined and not firing? this is really disturbing me and i wanna make sure it will be ok before i put it back together, thanks

Sounds like it could be from a leaking head gasket.

It could also be from running excessively rich or burning oil.

well my head gasket(s) did go bad on me, will it be ok when i put new gaskets on? im gonna change the plugs too(its almost time anyway) it only uses about a half quart between oil changes so i dont think its cause of burning oil

For what it's worth,my dad blew a head gasket on his 3.8 liter 88Thunderbird.When he took the head off on the side that the head gasket blew, the piston that was close to where the head gasket blew was completely spotless, the rest were "normal"

Our thinking was,the anti-freeze washed all everything off the cylinder where the headgasket blew.
