What are my chances ???

I've been to the track once and was only able to get a 14.90 with 2.33 60' times. At the time, I didn't have a converter and was leaving the car in drive and just stepping on the gas.

I'm going to the track on Friday and I now have a 2500 converter and am gonna drive a lot different too. It was suggested that I should manually shift my automatic at about 5400 rpms this time around.

Do you guys think this will drop my times by a lot? I think this car should have mid 13s potential on street tires. You can check the sig for the mods.

Thanks...

That converter should really help. Not much of and AODE guy, but if you were a 5 speed, you should be atleast mid 13's if not better!

I would think with your combo you would want to shift closer to 6000. You're probably just starting to make peak power at 5400.

moponys 05-23-2002 02:27 PM

I'll take your advice and shift at a little higher rpms (around 5400).

Hopefully my times will come down a lot. If not, that would suck because then the money I put into it would have been wasted if all I can get are basically stock times.

Thanks Guys...

Try different things, that's what the track is there for. If you're shifting too early, you're times will show it. You have a great combo on paper and I would expect you to knock on the door of some 12s.

Work on your 60 foot time. It's killing you.

moponys 05-23-2002 02:57 PM

You're right about my 60' times...they stink.

I noticed I had a heavy foot off the line and with out traction, I was spinning like crazy. I'm definately gonna try lots of different things tomorrow. I think I'll be able to get in around 10 runs.

What was your MPH in the 1/4?

moponys 05-23-2002 03:08 PM

I think it was 94 in the 1/4 mile...

89 Cobra LX 05-23-2002 03:11 PM

Wow, that is really slow for what you've done. I hope for your sake that was just because the car was doing the shifting.

What does the car shift at when you leave it in Drive?

Do you know the AOD shuffle?

moponys 05-23-2002 03:24 PM

Yeah tell me about it!!!

It was shifting on its own about 5000rpms

I don't know how to do the aod shuffle. From what I hear, I shouldn't have to shift like that because my cars an aode. Oh I don't really know.

In Fast Fords and Muscle Mustangs, they have a project car called the Stone Cold Pony that with basically the same setup as mine was consistantly at 13.5 when manually shifting 1st through 3rd.

If I can't get at least into the 13's, I probably won't be getting any other bolt ons with the exception of a Cobra R hood and maybe some chrome work and a paint job...

:(

I'm not real familiar with the AODE, but I believe you will still want to do the shuffle. First, I have a question. What does your shifter read for gears? 1-D-OD or 1-2-3-OD? In other words, do you have 3 or 4 selections for forward moving gears?

moponys 05-23-2002 03:55 PM

My shifter is like this

D
2
1

I have a od button that I keep off which basically keeps my car in 3rd when in D.

One suggestion I was given and it seems to work well when I tested it out on the street was to use D for 1st, then manually shift it into 2nd at around 5200 and then shift it back into D for 3rd at around 5400. The car seemed pretty quick when I was doing this. But then again, I'm one of those guys that thinks the car feels and drives better if I have a full tank of gas and new windshield wipers...

89 Cobra LX 05-23-2002 04:08 PM

I see, like I said, I'm not real familiar with the AODE. You won't need to do the shuffle. I would start in first gear, bump it to second at about 6000 and then bump it to third at 6000.

Again, try different shift points. With your combo you're going to make peak power somewhere around 5500 RPM. To take full advantage of your powerband, you will want to shift about 500 RPMs after your peak.

Good luck and let us know how much time you dropped. It should make a big difference just from manually shifting the car. If it was shifting at 5000 the last time you were missing out on a lot of your power.

moponys 05-28-2002 12:14 PM

Well I went to the track and my times really sucked bad... I couldn't even get into the 14s and I tried shifting all different ways (1-2-d, d-2-d, leaving it in d).

I'm hoping that this may be the problem. I didn't add the 2500 stall converter to my JMS chip. Could this be what's wrong... It's still programmed for the stock converter. I call JMS and said it might cause a problem. Do any of you guys know for sure?

Please let me know as this is driving me crazy.

Thanks,

Tony:confused:
