Distributor Install

I removed my distributor and never marked it's location. Can someone give me the steps to installing it so I can start the engine and time it. If the number one cylinder is at TDC can I install the dist. and just start it up?.

Thanks

I just put the engine at TDC (make sure it's the compression stroke) and point the rotor at the #1 plug. Make sure you leave a little space between the connector on the distributor and the thermostat housing to adjust timing.

What can happen when trying to start the engine when the distributor is not exactly set perfect?

If it doesn't pop it won't hurt anything, but if it's way advanced it can detonate which hurts pistons, gaskets etc.

From a beginners standpoint, Does anyone know of some good literature that describes the process of installing a distributor and setting the timing?
Thanks to everyone.

Get a Haynes manual, it will help
