Used engine questions
My last 5.0 motor was rebuilt by a machine shop. All I did was drop off the car, pay the bill and pick it up. Two years and many hard miles later, I need another motor. I'm purchasing a used, running 5.0 roller motor very soon. Other than checking the compression in each cylinder and the oil pressure, what else should I do? Install the motor as is? Should I tear it down, put a fresh hone on the cylinder walls, rering and bearing the shortblock and bolt on a main girdle? Or just have it rebuilt?

Hehehehe. Well, it works something like this:
As long as it's out, you might as well swap in some new bearings and rings. And since the heads are gonna be off, you might as well have them cleaned up at the machine shop. And since it's all apart now, might as well bore it to .030" over. And ya know, with new pistons going in, this would be a great time to put in that cam you always wanted. And you're right, you would get so much more out of that cam with better heads. And yeah, the old intake is gonna slow down the flow possibilities with the new parts, so it's gotta go too. And yup, that throttle body is acting like a bottleneck now, too! Got it? Doesn't matter, because once you make up your mind, and buy the parts, a blower is gonna creep into your mind. My friend, you're doomed. But you're still gonna have a blast. Hope that helped!:) Take care, -Chris |
Thanks! I'm only looking for 300 hp at the rear wheels. Keeping it naturally aspirated should save me some money. Thanks again!
