Fuel Problem...

A friend of mine has a 92 5.0 LX with no aftermarket parts, all the way down to the mufflers. He seems to have run into a fuel problem lately where if you turn the key(don not start) the pump will keep pumping all the time. Fuel is present until you crank over the engine, then nothing. Also he said you can hear the pump running over the engine. It's real loud. I told him I thought he needed a fuel pump. Since my car primes the fuel pump and then cuts off until you crank the engine. His continuously runs no matter what. Do you think the computer won't let it start because it never got the signal it was primed and ready. Remember, everything is stock on this car.

Thanks for your help, James

The relay could be bad, then again the pumps go bad often. I have seen posts in here about this problem or at least pretty close to it, maybe someone can give you more insight about this than me. I would check the relay though, it is under the driverside seat on my two 88's but I believe it is under the hood for the later models like the one your friend has. Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention that he did replace both relays, they were under the hood like you said. i told him the only thing I see left it could be was the fuel pump but I also said I would come on here and make sure someone agreed. By the way, the car has 130,000 miles on it and if I remember right, thats about the end of the lifespan for these pumps. Should the pump prime and then cut off just after switching the ignition on? Thats what mine does.

Yeah, they shut off if you don't crank it after they prime, sounds like your friend needs a new one. It's good to go ahead and get an aftermarket size so future mods don't conflict! good luck ya both!:D
