Three-quarter cam?

I've got a friend that doesn't really know much about cars, but he's always talking about his dad's chevy. I asked him what he had in it and he said "it's a 350 with a three quarter cam." I asked him which cam it was and he said "I told ya, it's a three quarter cam." I've heard this term from time to time over the past few years. WHAT THE HELL IS A 3/4 CAM?

Please enlighten me.

dont hold me to this, i got out of hot rods for a long time, but it's like a full race cam, or 3 quarter race cam , if i remember right, it all has to do with lift & duration , etc, jeeez i forgot alot about chevy's because i gave up on them in the late 70's, :)

Come from back when there wasn't many choices in cams. there was either stock or race then someone decided to grind a cam that was in between and called it a 3/4 race cam.

Chevy-boy must have gotten that term from his grandfather.

Back in the '50's, Offenhauser was the big aftermarket cam manufacturer. They had a fairly aggressive cam for the wildly popular Ford flathead V-8 that was termed a '3/4 race' cam, as opposed to a 'full-race' near-unstreetable cam.

That was about 50 years ago.

Your friend has no clue what's in that Chevy except that it probably has an aftermarket cam.

Thanks Gents, now I understand. He's not a B.S.er, he's just not very knowledgeable yet. He probably got the term from his father and just assumed that whomever he said it to wouldn't question him about it. He's going to be getting his dad's malibu in July, and he asked me to show him the ropes when he gets it. He's been helping me work on my car off and on for a year or so, but he just does what I ask him to do and he's trying to learn. As long as someone is trying to learn, then I'll have no problems working with them. If they just want me to do the work for them (which he doesn't), then I'd better be getting paid or I won't do it. You know how it goes.
