Reliability... Power... Moddability...
Finally selling my car which will give me money for either of these 2 things. Swap a 302 into a Volvo 240 or buy a nice 87-91 LX/GT. How reliable are these cars when kept at stock power levels? What would it take to get about 350 rwhp NA?

5.0 possibilities
The 87-91 Mustang 302 is very reliable as I can attest, having owned a '90 LX since it was new and with only some minor enhancements to the car, I now have over 117,000 miles on it with few problems beyond normal wear and tear replacements (clutch, brakes, tires, batteries, water pump, struts & shocks, exhaust).
Stories like mine abound with Mustang owners. Of course some are beat on and abused, too, but most Mustang 5.0's are still viable and running strong. 350 RWHP would require a substantial investment . A supercharger along with the right heads and all the related accessories would do it but the 5.0 bottom end would need strengthing at that point. Nothing money can't accomplish. Stock 5.0 RWHP is around 190 so you're looking to gain 160 HP - which is a lot but quite possible and certainly rewarding. |
I really want a project car, money will be an issue but overtime a lot will be spent. I'm thinking that a 347 stroker would be in my future or possibly a 351.
I considered the Mustang for the price of parts and how easy it is to work on them opposed to my current car where it took over 5 hours to disconnect everything so the engine could be pulled. I found several very nice EFI LX's and GT's in the 3000 range and hopefully they will be available in when my car is finally sold(put out an ad today). |
