gears

Hi, can anyone tell me what is the stock gear ratio in a 1997 Mustang Gt Vert??? i'm hearing 2.73's? is that correct? and if so do u all reccomend 3.73's or 4.10's?

You could have 2.73's, 3.08's, 3.27's, even 3.55's, all depending on what tranny and what gear option (if any) was chosen when the vehicle was purchased.

If you have a manual, I'd go with 3.73's (maybe 4.10 depending on whether you value gas mileage). If it's auto, 4.10's are a must.

If you still have the factory bell housing on your rear-end you can find out what kind of gear you had factory. There will be a small metal tag bolted on with one of your cover bolts. On it will be a series of numbers and letters. Mine on my 98 had this:

3L08 = This is a 3.08 Trac-Lok rear end.
3L73 = This is a 3.73 Trac-Lok rear end.
308 = This is a normal 3.08 gear.

???

What does trac-lock mean? like 3L08 is trac-locked 308's? wat's the difference between normal and trac-lock??

and thanks for the info!!!

Trac-Lok is basically Ford's version of the Posi-Trac setup. It's clutch driven instead of cone type. The good thing about the clutch type is, if it breaks or wears out you can have it rebuilt. I had my clutches modified and I have 3 on each side, instead of two. If it's not Trac-Lok then it's limited slip.
