Airbags?

I'm looking to buy an 87-93 LX 5.0 vert and I have to have airbags. Almost every stang i look at that i want to buy doesn't have airbags. Is there anyway that i can convert it to Aribags? This would be really great. THANKS!

90LxDroptop 06-19-2002 01:13 AM

I know...

Here's a question I CAN ANSWER! i think. Well I'm pretty sure airbags only came on the 90' stangs (25th anniversary) My Vert has em'. as for converting, I dunno.

93GTDIN 06-19-2002 01:33 AM

thats actually not true. I believe 90 (or 89 maybe) Is when ford made driver side airbags standard on mustangs. Dual airbags came standard in 1994 when the sn95 was introduced

fiveohpatrol 06-19-2002 01:38 AM

it was 1990 when they became standard in mustangs.

thats when they got that even more hideous steering wheel :)

PKRWUD 06-19-2002 04:06 AM

Just get a '90 or newer Mustang. Anything is possible if you have the money, but retrofitting a pre '90 just wouldn't be worth it, IMO.

Take care,
-Chris

Going the other way

I have a question,
what if you have a 90 and want to go the other direction? You know get a stering column from an 87-89 Mustang? Because you can't stand the air bag?

Guess that tells you what year Mustang I have and the type of steering wheel. LOL

But has anyone ever made that conversion?

RPM427 06-19-2002 12:45 PM

If you wanted to convert to airbags it would be more trouble then its worth. Not only would you have to find and install a steering coulumn from a 90 or up stang, you would have to get all of the sensors and wiring harnesses for the airbag. You will also lose the tilt steering wheel. Just save some money and headaches and buy a 90 - 93 stang.

I think the airbag steering wheels look a lot better then the pre 90's cars, by the way ;)

As do I...as do I...

damn it, o well guess i'll have to just get a newer model, I'll just let my dad knw that so he can chip in a few bucks.

RPM427 06-20-2002 07:26 AM

The 90-93 models are better then the 87-89 on many different reasons. You will like a 90 - 93 a lot more then an older car anyway. And if you come across a 93 mustang that you like, its not true that they have 20 less horse power then all the other models, so don't let that infuence your decision.

93GTDIN 06-23-2002 10:52 PM

very true! The 93 models are as good and the 20 less horsepower thing is only partially true. The loss is due to a pileup of changes ford made over the years, and in 93, they decided to toss a new number on there. 93 models do however have hypereutectic pistons, which have been deemed by many not boost/nitrous friendly. This is due mainly to the fact that hypereutectic pistons wont hold up to detonation. The truth is, forged pistons dont hold up well to detonation either. Just..... avoid detonation. I got my 93 about a year and a half ago for 8000. Kind of pricy for a 5.0 but its a GT convertible, had 28000 miles, and was in mint condition when I bought it.

I've driven newer foxes, and I like the older 87-88 SD cars a LOT better than MAF. There are some (few) upgrades worth mentioning.

MAF for those people who are going wild with the combo or adding boost.

91 Featured enlarged front fenderwells and 16" Pony wheels. (Not that the 1987-1989 cars aren't commonly equipped with the 16's now.

Personally, I dislike airbags. Some studies show they help, others that they do not. Personally, I doubt they do anything. All I see is extra expense associated with purchasing a car.

If you have to have airbags, you should get a 1989 with drivers side, or 90+ the 5.0's are all standard drivers side anyway. There were changes to the gauge cluster when the airbags were introduced, along with the wiring changes.

Not Arguing

Not to start an arguement, but no 89 Mustang came with an airbag steering wheel.

The standard driver's side airbag started in 90,and for 12 plus years I have hated myself for buying a car with the piece of crap in it.

Anyone know if a 94-present steering column fits in a 90-93 Mustang, the reason being I am looking for a tilt-steering wheel,if I cannot ditch the air bag, then at least let me get one with a tilt-column.

As always any and all advice is welcomed.

5.0 Pony 06-25-2002 12:48 AM

actually some mustangs did come with airbags before 1990, just that it was an option.

RPM427 06-25-2002 07:49 AM

I've never heard of that. Where did you hear it? I am interested.

PKRWUD 06-25-2002 08:01 AM

They were installed in 1989 into 1990 models. 1990 was the "debut" year.

Take care,
-Chris

I know that a airbag car can be converted to non Airbag by using a 87-89 steering column, as the dirtbag that stole my 91 LX 5.0 Hatch did that to it, ( and also put a stolen 94 351 Lightning motor in it too) Back then you could get a few hundred $$ for the air bag, used airbags still are worth some cake, I never see them left in the cars in the junkyard that I remember.

HORSEMEN RACING 06-25-2002 12:43 PM

WOW

well I guess you learn something new everyday,I never knew the airbag was an option on Mustangs,I knew Taurus' had it for awhile, but never heard of it for Mustangs.

Well since everyone says it was an option,I guess I have to believe it,thanks for the correction folks
