Running with your headlight/corner light out (Ramair)? If yes, what are you results?
I have noticed a lot more stangs running with the headlight out (or corner marker for FOXbodies). Personally I have noticed a gain of about ".2" seconds on the quartermile run. The car pulls by about 1-1.5 cars more in third gear only.
Anyone else does this? What kind of improvements have you noticed? Note: I only took out the silencer and the headlight. Airfilter and air box remains. I have tried with the airfilter out, and the car didn't seem to know what to do with all that extra air... so it ran all over the map (in the 14s). |
i haven't tried it but looks like could be worth something and doesn't cost anything but time.

Would this be work anything over a regular fender cai? It's pretty much the same except instead of the fender its going through the headlight right? I guess maybe since the air has a straighter path it could work better....

My home made cold air/ram air outfit is similar to what you describe. It has 2 4" ducts coming in from behind the grille between the headlights and the radiator mounted in the radiator support.
My carburetor is surrounded by an enclosure made from a 33 gal drum that encloses a 3"X14" K&N filter. I think this thing lowers my ET by maybe .1 or so at the track. Rev |
hmmm... I thought more people removed their lights... I guess I was wrong. I was just trying to get second opinions because things went a bit hot with a stangnet user;
http://forums.stangnet.com/showthrea...151post1443151 Oh well... |
I dont know about the new stangs but on the fox bodies the hole is pretty small behind the corner light. Its about as big around as a magic marker.

One of my buddies with his 5.0 has made the hole bigger (a bit bigger than the bottom of a Pepsi can) and he runs around with the corner light out everywhere.
On the newer mustangs, the hole is about the size of a the bottom of a pepsi can, maybe a bit more. |
I'm going to take it out this friday and see how it helps me out. The track i race at is 1/8 mile but i do go through it at the top of 3rd and you said that where you notice it most so maybe it will still work out. I'll run a baseline or 2 then take it out to see if any improvment. did you notice it more in yout e.t or in your m.p.h??
|
I just took it out to see what i would need and took only a minute or 2. the hole there is about the size of a 12 once soda can. I'll see how it does and if i notice any improvement then i'll work on enlarging the hole some.

Lizard King
At Moroso dragway in West Palm Beach where i run i see most if not all the newer GTs perform that mod in the staging lanes. Very common and i have heard it helps about a tenth also. |
I removed the corner light on my 87 hatch and cut it out bigger but not to big so I can still put the light back I seen the most in the 3rd and 4th gears when your up to speed but then they say you have to be at around 100mph before the ram air effect takes place

Personally, for that small of a gain, i'd buy a CAI and not look like an idiot driving around town with a missing headlight...
(Just my opinion though...) |
I have a question on this subject. I have a fenderwell Cold Air Intake, if I took the headlight out, and maybe made the hole bigger would it work better, because it would be forcing the air directly into the air filter. Or would I see no gain because it is alreadt getting air forced into it.
I would think it should help a little in the top end, and I want to try it. Do you think I should cut the hole bigger or just leave it the same size. I don't want to cut the car up and not have it work. |
25thmustang. My plan is to see how it affect my car and if i think it worthwhile then i'll cut a bit more out and see if that helps any.

I have the fender well cold air and I took my coner light out so the air is run right to the filter it seems to help even on days when the temp is at 90+ the air is cooler running it that way is instead of just picking up the air from the fender and your getting more air to it....
|
Thanks, I will try it because it looks like it is going to be 90 degrees on Wednesday, and I want to go 13s. I will finally try my tires, my ground spark plugs (trick in 5.0 Mustang) and now this.
|
good luck on hitting 13s
let us know how it goes. good or bad... |
I hope good, but it looks like it will be in the high 90s that day!!!

I started doing this some 2.5 years ago and I have never been able to prove it actually does anything. Here in Florida humidity get's pretty bad so there are nights when it really hurts ET. What I've noticed is that on a night where the air is fairly dry or cool I pick up a few hundreths. On warm nights it slows me down a few hundreths. This past weekend in Virgina where I ran my new best it was done with the headlight in.
Tonight at Moroso (if the rain stays away) I think it's slicks only night which means I'll get plenty of runs in I'll see about doing a before and after comparison in the same lane under the same conditions. Bill |
