5 liter and 2500 bucks to play with what would you do

Suppose you had a stock 87-92 5 liter, 5-speed. What mods would you do if you had 2500 bucks to spend.....no power adders please.

fiveohpatrol 07-04-2002 12:44 AM

how stock are we talking? and I'm hoping everything will be self installed right?

gears: $200
longtubes, h-pipe and mufflers: ~$500
pulleys: no wait, your gonna have a big stereo:)
shifter:$200
slicks or DR's: $300
MAF: $200
TB: $200
subframes: $100
stock heads freshened up, and some home port work: $100
explorer intake: $200-300
TFS stage 1 cam: $150

and a few hundred left over for little stuff

tireburner163 07-04-2002 08:59 AM

I was thinking about.............

stage 1 ported GT-40P's
Cobra or Explorer intake
Steada #18 cam
gears
unequal length shorties(maybe long tubes)
off-road H-pipe
1.7 RR's
65m TB

Later I will gradually add more mods as I get money....subframes, shifter, mass-air meter, FPR, exc.

phatpony 07-04-2002 11:35 AM

The best bang for the buck is to change the gears. They are relatively inexpensive and you notice an instant change in performance. After that, definately work on the induction and cam.

Dark_5.0 07-04-2002 11:38 AM

AFR 185's 1,200
Explorer intake 200
Headers 200
gears 159
X-pipe 200
Tri-ax shifter 150

Since I am under budget I might as well by some Mickey Thompson ET streets 330.00

All of this on a speed density Notch back should be good for high 12's.

theres no way I would ever choke down an awesome set of heads like the AFR's with an explorer intake (or GT40/cobra). Especially the 185's. I wouldnt go with anything less than a edelbrock RPM or holley intake with those heads. I know its a money issue here, but you gotta match the combo well.

Stroked408 07-04-2002 12:52 PM

2500 bucks hmmmm

well since this is a dream list here goes:
ported stock heads with bigger valves(1.90/1.60) 5-600 dollars
Cobra intake with 65mm throttle body 410 for intake 170 for throttle body
E303 or B303 or any alphabet cam for 170 dollars
1.6 bolt down rockers 240 dollarsMac shorty headers 169
Off road h-pipe 125
shifter 160 bucks
3.73 gears 170
install 250
equals 2464 not including taxes and you have 36 dollars left over.

Or you could just buy a set of GT40P heads assembled from Summit for 550 dollars and add 31 dollars to the price of the headers and you still inder the 2500 dollars you want to spend.

Have at it.

tireburner163 07-04-2002 10:31 PM

Dark 5.0 185's won't even work with the stock pistons.

I've decided to do shortie headers, off-road h-pipe, gears, shifter, Steada #18 cam, 76MM C&L mass-air, and a 65 or 70mm TB.

What I haven't decided on are the heads and intake. It down to a set of ported GT-40P's(thanks Eric) with a Cobra intake or a set of ported TFS twisted wedge heads(thanks again Eric) and a Edelbrock performer intake or TFS intake.

I know the TFS heads will make more power....but they'll also cost a good bit more money. What do you think the differences in 1/4 mile times would be?

BTW, if you rocket scientists haven't figured it out yet, I'm getting a 5.0 in the near future(this winter)

fiveohpatrol 07-05-2002 12:54 AM

Josh, what are the specs on that steeda 18 cam?

Stroked408 07-05-2002 09:06 AM

Add more money

well since you are going to get either a TFS or Eddy intake you better add in the price of a EGR spacer and they go for 49-67 dollars depending on where you buy it from.

The Cobra does not need an EGR spacer like the rest do,it is your decisions.

Oh by the way I thought you asking about a Camaro on a Mustang chat board,it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out you are thinking about a Mustang.

That was for some of the senior member who have been here a while and know how much I've wanted a 5 liter.

tireburner163 07-05-2002 09:24 AM

I've decided I'm gonna go with the ported GT-40P's. With the 500 bucks I saved I can buy other speed parts.

The specs on the Steada cam are......

.480 lift
220/226 duration at .050
112 LSA

Dark_5.0 07-05-2002 09:57 AM

AFR 185's dont work with stock pistons.........Why not?

Stroked408 07-05-2002 10:32 AM

they work

They will work you just have to notch the pistons with stock pistons and AFR 185's.

Burner that is just my way of messing with you,I knew you meant no offense, and I did not mean to come off like a smart-alic.

185's on a stock 302???? Could work long as you have a good intake and cam to support them.

GT40P is not a bad investment at all.

Good Luck

Eric4Nitrous 07-05-2002 11:17 AM

Josh, I always thought you wanted a Honda instead of a Mustang?? haha..oh by the way..who's this Eric guy you keep talking about?? He must be a pretty smart guy..lol Need anymore advice let me know man. glad to help out!

Eric

Dark 5.0 I would have to have the pistons fly cut...which is more money I don't have. Not to mention I'd have to drop about 550 bucks on a intake to match the head's flow.

I think I've decied to go with the TFS #1 cam with the porte heads...
.498/.510 lift
221/225 duration at .050
LSA 112

fiveohpatrol 07-05-2002 12:17 PM

if you do change your mind, and go back to the steeda cam, then you'll definately want a set of 1.7's to get that lift up to 0.510 instead of .480

Oh ok.......Dont worry you will change your mind many times before you actually buy......I know I did.

Compared to your 4 banger a stock 5.0 will be a blast.

Skyman 07-05-2002 07:39 PM

I would buy P heads $500.

Mill them as much as possible, you can get about 10-10.5:1 compression.

Edelbrock performer intake, 375-400 used
E-303 cam $100 used
shorty headers $80 used
off-road H pipe $75 used
65mm TB/EGR $250
73-75mm Maf ~$200
ADJ FRP $60
pulleys $80
3.73 gears $500
gaskets $100
shifter $170

Total right about $2500.

buy some tires when u have a chance later, you'll have fun burning the **** out of the ones you have. And you'll have a car with a killer powerband a torque that should run 12's easy.

Skyler

Skyman 07-05-2002 07:41 PM

Youll need roller rockers, so hold off on the shifter :-D
