97 Stang 07-04-2002 10:55 AM

power source

I know this should be in the audio forum but it seems like nobody ever posts in there. But, here's my question. I'm hooking up my subs and I don't know where to tap into for the 12v power for the amp. I don't want to hit the battery directly because I don't want to go through the firewall. So does anybody know of a place inside the passenger compartment that I can tap into? I've got a 1997 GT if it matters. Thanks for any responses.

Why don't you want to go through the firewall? I think most of the systems run relays to keep the current down in the car.

tireburner163 07-04-2002 11:16 AM

Go to the battery!!!! That's the only way to go, plain and simple. A amp is gonna pull WAY too many amps wire it into the fuse pannel or anything.

BTW, what subs/amp are you running?

Hey tireburner, I've got two 10" Rockford Fosgate XLC's being pushed by an Audioplanet 600W amp. I guess I will go through the firewall then, I just didn't want to mess with that. Was hoping there was an easier way. Thanks for helping out though.

if you've got AIM....hit me up. my SN is tireburner963. I'll walk you through it and give you some pointers

lol...i just replied to you in audio...

go through the door to the hood...most cars have a hole there big enough for a 6ga wire...this way you dont touch the firewall...

I wouldn't do that....the wire and get pinched and cause a short.

jj_jonathon 07-04-2002 02:45 PM

i said it depends on your car...maybe the 97 gt doesnt have enough room, but youd be surprised how durable monstercable is...and a little bit of pressure on 6ga wire really does nothign to it cuz the outer layer is so thick...ive done this a number of times and most cars hardly push on the wire, and never actually "pinch" it... :)...but like i said..never done it to a 97 gt

Hey jj_jonathon, I went through the hole you were talking about and it doesn't look like that much pressure is being put on the wire. But thanks for the caution tireburner, I'll definitely keep my eye on it. But everything is hooked up now and it sounds awesome. Thanks for the help.

jj_jonathon 07-04-2002 02:54 PM

no prob...thats what were here for, right? hehe... :D

just be careful......over time the insulation can wear down, then the door and wire can make direct contact....and that just ain't fun. IMO the best way is to wire it through the firewall....you don't actully have to drill a hole...there should be a grommet or something you can run it through.

jj_jonathon 07-05-2002 12:24 AM

im telling you that theres no substancial wear...lol...usually the panelling actually protects it...the tricky part is getting it into that little spot... :)

wait..........

I'm just telling you what CAN happen. If you take it somewhere to get it installed they're gonna run it through the firewall. Oh, and what if your running 4 gauge like me?:) hehe

1969Mach1 07-05-2002 12:22 PM

hehehehe... stop argueing. lol :D What would Dan say if he seen this, lol :D Yeh I'm going to finish up installing my deck tonight, it's actually pretty easy, I started last night actually. I just took out my old deck and just looked around, I have no subs or amp hooked up yet, but it'll be all in good time. I got 2 Sony 10's that I was debating putting in a box. I don't want no crazy sound system in my stang, just abit of bass (I don't want to raddle the sh*t out of it) I'm getting 2 new 6x9's and I am thinking of finding somewhere to put 2 front components or maybe just another set of 6x9's. Anyone know anything about putting front speakers in a '69 Mustang? I have 1 front speaker that I thought didn't work but apparently it wasn't even connected so I am going to try to connect that tonight and I sure hope it works. :D My buddy has a 600Watt RMS Audiobahn 12 sub but he hasn't hooked it up to his car yet. We're thinking of throwing it in my stang once he buys his amp this week and go to some rice show, and pull up with a bad *** car and then just pound the living **** out of everything. I can't imagin it would be safe for my car though. hehehe

then youd be like my buddy who has two audiobahns running with 1600watts goin to em...and i helped him install it..running the wire by the door :) course he drives a sunfire :\...the hole was perfect for it...i would never go through the firewall myself...

and this is not an arguement :D hehe...i honestly have never run the wire that way with a stang (never had the chance to)...so you could be right about wear in a stang...its all about making sure you take care of your car/system...keeping an eye on things...and ahem...smells...rofl.. :D

1600 watts....how many amps? I don't like audiobangs:p They blow too easy.

1969Mach1 07-05-2002 11:33 PM

Well I put my deck in tonight, and that was all hell. I gotta make a mounting bracket but my dad drilled into the interior harness and my dash started smoking like mad, but we solved that problem and the deck works great. :D Just gotta properly mount it.

§am.

jj_jonathon 07-06-2002 01:09 AM

1600watts = one amp :)

and audiobahns last longer than mtx's 8000 series...bleh! try the alum12x...damn they rock...they hit down to 18hz, 1000watts rms, but have weird ohm setup when it comes to wiring...you gotta read the wiring directions audiobahn gives ya for it very well..loland theyve been around for 2 years now...and still kickin'! :)

tireburner163 07-06-2002 09:21 AM

what amp is he running? Must be mucho expensive.

Yea the aluminum ones are the only ones worth having.

Edit: 1600 watts max or rms? If you say something like Legency I'm gonna biznitch slap you.:p

jj_jonathon 07-06-2002 01:13 PM

its actually legacy....and at the time it was in the price range and its turned out to be incrediblecuz you can buy the 1600watt for like $140 online...they seem to work very well with the alum12x, clear and crisp which i thought was quite a surprise...but it wasnt a fluke, i helped another friend instal a system in his truck and suggested he get the same setup, and i found himt he 1800watt one for about the same price, plus a good price on a alum12x and the damn thing sounds professional...i would never buy a crap speaker, but it seems that sometimes the cheaper amps can work well...not to say that if i had the money to pay for a $1200 class d amp i would go for the 2ch legacy, but still...$140 for 1400-1800watts id say is a deal :)
