86 GT in running condition for $250?

Ok, here is the scoop. My dad came across this 86 GT today. I really do not like the 86 mustangs, because of the front ends, and the four eyed lights. Also I do not like the interior. He was talking to the guy, and he got him down to $250! My dad says the car runs fine, and it looks decent. What do you guys think? Buy it as a project car or leave it? I think this guy just dosen't know what the car is worth!

I am currently shopping for an 87-93 5.0 mustang, and think it would be really neat for me to have a mustang, and my dad to have one to, as he happens to like the 86 mustangs.

I also forgot to mention that this car has t-tops on it, which, if I am correct make the car even more rare? Let me know what you guys think.

I'd get it, even if you don't want to keep it, you could put a little work into it and maybe sell it for more towards $1000, then you'd have more money to put towards a nicer car. I guess it would depend on how much work it needed though!

$250!?

Your a fool if you don't buy it.....as long as its not a complete rust bucket

Does anyone know the production numbers of the 86 GT's with t tops? Im thinking this guy dosent know what he has. According to my dad, the car could use a paint job, and cleaning, but as far as he could see, thats about it. I was thinking if I added a flowmaster catback, and put a paint job on it, I can say it was a project car that I don't have time for anymore.

With that, I might be able to sell it for about $1,500 and put the money towards my dream, a 87-93 hatchback 5 spd 5.0 :)

Not That Rare

86 GT is a good car but it is not rare, especially one with T-tops,if anything T-tops take away from the strength of the chassis, the t-tops leak,I am speaking from experience here I had one, they have smaller throttle bodies, smaller intakes, the worse head design in the history of man for a performance car,and the transmission is a ticking timebomb.

Just the facts I had one for 2 years,it is a great car and 250 dollars is a steal,if the headlights bother you just put a 87-93 front end on it.

You are the first I have ever heard say that, the 4 headlight cars are hard to come by yes,but rare no,if you are looking for rare try finding a 85 Mustang GT 5-speed,that is going to be a rare car because it is the last year of carburetion, and the first year of the roller camshaft in a production Mustang.

Ok guys, I was looking into this more. Blue Book value, in the worst shape with 150,000 miles the car is worth $810. The next step up it is worth $1,800. This is without doing any work to the car. So im thinking if I put a paint job on it, clean it up real good, and put some nice sounding flows on it, maybe I can make a decent profit???

I would buy it. I have one that is getting parted out. I used to drive it. Check under the carpet for extensive rust. Those t-tops leak like crazy.

Hey if you don't buy it, tell me where it is. I want it. lol

1hot5.0 07-18-2002 01:01 PM

My dad is taking pics of the car today if he passes buy it. If he gets them, I will post them here for you guys to see, then give me your opinion. :)

Um? I don't see the predicament here...running, not half rusted away V8 Mustang...for $250.

This is obviously your first Mustang, and you're complaining because its not an 87+??? Geez. Its called a front clip and moulding swap, especially since you said it needs a paint job anyways.

HORSEMEN: I think the 86 and older Mustangs could be easily considered more rare. Maybe not in collector value, but just for the fact that since they ARE older, there are more that have been wrecked, parted out, or devoured by rust. I agree with you about the 86 engines, but I think for 1hot5.0's purposes, that's probably not the biggest priority. If he can find a straight body, then that 150K original motor can be yanked later!

dude...dont waste anymore time. go buy it before its sold.

1hot5.0 07-18-2002 04:01 PM

I'm 95% sure I'm going to get it, but if I do, I'm not going to keep it. (I'll be picking it up on Saturday if everything goes right). Im going to put a little work into it, and sell it. Let's face it, I'm not going to loose any money on it. I'll keep you guys posted on what's happening. Thanks for all of your input, I really appreciate it.
