New UPS contract

I know alot of you guys don't like unions but I am sooo happy right now:). The Teamster and UPS have agreed on a contract and that means that the money I had put aside can be used towards some bills and I can go out and buy a decent ride. We are getting a good yearly raise(better than I expected) and 6 years of job security:). We really work hard for the wages we make and the job really takes a toll on you physically but... I feel very lucky to be where I am, alot of folks don't have jobs right now. It really is a relief.

That's excellent, Rick!!! I'm really happy for you!!! It makes life a lot easier to deal with when youhave job security!! It couldn't happen to a more deserving man!!!

:)

Take care,
-Chris

UPS contract

Rick:

Congratulations on the new contract.

No, I'm not a fan of unions as they are often corrupt at the top even while taking care of the members and in some cases, seniority counts for a lot more than hard work or ability which goes against my grain, as it were.

That said, most union members I know (quite a few) are good people, hard working and deserving of what they have.

I would say that you are one of those, Rick, so again, congratulations.

Thanks guys

I know its been awhile since I've been on here(vacation) but I want you to know I really appreciate the kind words. Tomorrow is August 1st, new contract and job security:). Thanks again.

Rick

Unions aren't all good. I know of many cases where people have become worse off because of a union. In my experience unions protect those that don't want to work and hinder those with ambition. But I live in Canada were unions are almost stronger than government

As along as you personally do well from this, then I am happy for you. Best luck!

Hey Man thats great news for you and I both for the fact that I am currently trying to get on at UPS at the local "hub" (whatever you call it) to help me get through school...any advice on how to get in??? :D

RBatson II 07-31-2002 08:26 PM

I realize there is some corruption in unions, there is corruption in the government too.. the United Way even had some corruption awhile back, one of the guys embezeled alot of money(I was giving weekly, out of my check, at the time). Look at the CEOs and the big companies at the present time. To me it all comes down to the fact that if the companies paid the workers fairly then there wouldn't be a need for unions. I come from a family of union workers(goes back a ways) and I've seen the good and the bad. I do appreciate that I get good benefits and "an honest days pay for an honest days work". We could discuss this matter further but that is not what I'm trying to do here:). I appreciate your views, I honestly do(I also understand them).

4cyl_Of_Fury, I started part-time as well. I was going to college and that helps getting your foot in the door as the company hires mostly college kids to work part-time. There were 7 of us that got picked out of a 3 page list for a 2nd interview. 3 of us got hired for peak season(Christmas) and only two of us got called back. Only one of us made the cut, luckily it was me. I suggest you dress nice and explain that you can and are usted to doing hard work(because that is what it is). My first week at UPS was like my first week at football practice every August. I've seen guys start that didn't finish the first day, I saw one guy puke his first/last day. Its hard work. It will however keep you in good shape;). Good luck with the interview. Oh yeah, it may help if you know one of the local drivers.
