HELP Removal of Alternator Pulley!!
I'm trying to install my ASP Pulleys and I've having one 'ell of a time trying to get the alternator pulley off.
I have a pipe wrench on the stock pulley and am usig a 17" breaker bar (turning Counter Clockwise) and the nut just won't go. Am I turning this thing the right way? It just feels like something might give and I don't want to have to replace a dam alternator. Help Please! |
Yea, that thing is a real pain. I ended up using an air ratchet at a buddy's place.
|
Thanks,
I'll keep gonig. :) |
I think that the nut is holding the pulley tight and the shaft into the alternator is just turning. I don't have an air compressor and impact. Any other ideas? Is there anyway to stop the alternator from turning??

The best way to do this is with an impact wrench, whether it be air or electric. In step by step:
Take the alternator off. Use the impact with the correct socket size. Hold the pulley with you other hand. (be sure the impact is going the right direction cause this can hurt) It should spin right off. Like the great (yeah right) haynes manual would say: Installation is the reverse of the removal That is how I have always done it. It is too easy not to do it that way. |
I tried getting mine off by hand, but felt like I was going to break a blade on the alternator whenever I tried to keep it from spinning. I know this is a PITA, but a place like O'Reilly's or a local garage would probably take it off for you for little or no charge. I know when I bought my new alt., O'Reilly's took it in the back and put my underdrive pulley on it for me. You might call them....
|
I forgot about that. They will swap pulleys for ya. If they do charge you it won't be but like a few dollars.

New Found Alternate Method:
New Found Alternate Method:
1. Spray WD40 on Nut 2. Strike lightly with hammer. 3. Post question on Mustangworks. 4. Tell car you love it very much and you would be very happy if the (insert favorite expression here) nut would just come loose 5. Using 17" breaker bar and Ninja-like reflexes turn nut quickly counter clockwise. 6. Remove badass little nut 7. Install new ASP pulleys 8. Go out and smoke 2 ricers :) |
Oops almost forgot new sig :)
|
Just make sure that it is really on there tight... not just on there. It would almost be worth your time to take it off and have someone hit it with an impact if you get a chance.

I had a buddy of mine who put his alt. pulley on with a breaker bar. Two weeks later, he thought his belt broke. When he popped the hood, it was gone. No big deal until he went to put it on and the alternator nut and pulley were missing! He had to buy a new alternator just to get the nut and pulley. Take that for what it is worth.

an impact wrench works best...
