hydraulic roller valvetrain for HP street??

My engine builder made the suggestion to me that we avoid the hydraulic roller camshaft and lifters due to the $$ of them. The car is a 93 Mustang and the 392 I'm building will be EFI equipped with Carb#'s on all parts (well, almost all the parts :-) in hopes of passing emissions with a smog pump. He also commented that the hydraulic roller setup is not worth the money for a daily driven street 392 stroker that won't be seeing 6-7K Rpm's on the street. I will be taking it to the strip occassionaly. He also said the final decision was of course up to me. I already bought the Crane 1.6 Gold Race Roller Rockers....What do you think? Go with the hydraulic roller or something else??

Personally, that sounds like total crap to me. Roller cams can make more power than a flat tappet due to running much more aggressive lift ramps. Sure, you could run the same specs on a flat tappet cam but the friction between the cam and lifters would wear them both out pretty quick (not to mention having to adjust your valvetrain constantly). If you have some time, compare the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy flat tappet grinds to the roller grinds. More lift and less duration from the roller cams which equals out to better vacuum and throttle response. But like the man said...the final decision is yours.
