Looking to beef up my 8.8 right the first time!

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 8.8 and want to do it right. I'm thinking, Moser 31 spline axles, SVO 31spline posi, maybe Auburn-Pro, any suggestions which differentials are good, strong? All new bearings and a girdle with studs. I'm eventually looking to run high 10's on the rear end. Do I need 35spline axles? I have disc breaks in the rear so I really don't need the c-clip eliminator kit. I want the rearend strong and only do this once. Successful mustanger's drop me some hints, THANKS!

All Are Good

With differentials on the market these days it is hard to go wrong,I like the Eaton differential myself, reason being it can be rebuilt, definitely get the 31 splines if you want a little more piece of mind, while you are at it weld the axle tubes to give a little more support.

Moser,Strange, take your pick they are both top of the line and do not forget Mark Williams and Reider Racing, they all make excellent rear axle components.

Look up Drivetrain Direct in Corona they sell complete rear axle packages least is 540 dollars the most is 700 and that is because of the ARB air locker diff, the DTD package comes with everything bearings, axles, diff, you name it I would also get a TA performance rear end girdle cover little bit of extra insurance.

Gt the DTD kit(560$ shipped to your door). It will have everything you need to replace. While you are at I would do things like control arms, springs shocks, cover, driveshaft, anything you think you would want to do in the futrure. Thats what i did and let me tell you, its a pain(and a little harder on the wallet) but youll save time if you do it all at once.

Unless I had a bad one I would stay away from Aubern. I blew one up into 100's of peices (no joke) pulling 1.4 60's. If you are looking to go 10's I would get a locker. They are strong as hell and are still streetable.

C-clip eliminators are MANDATORY by NHRA rules at 10.99. Not a pretty sight to see a high power car lose an axle.

For 10's, I'd go with a full spool, 33-splines w/ eliminators, main cap studs, TA type cover/support and welded tubes.

How fast are you gonna go? Ive seen stock rear'd cars go 1.59's no problemo.

Agree

I like DTD stuff also, have not done business with them yet,but I have made many phone calls to them, the PowerTraxx differential looks like a stout piece, but I have heard it is a little noisy.

Excellent question Skyler, damn good question what is your end product you are looking for,a good friend of mine told me once you plan on a 10 sec timeslip build it for 9 seconds.

Backing up what Jeff said, watch the WFC4 video where the Factory Stock class is running 2nd round I think the guys name is Brad Vrablic has GT fox body car,he was racing Bob Cosby and his axle walked out right after the launch, the strangest thing I have ever seen watching a car go wrong direction and the axle go another, not that I wish anyone bad luck, but I am glad it happend on the starting line when it could have happened at the top end of the track.

If it was me,31 spline axles, diff, take your pick, bearings seals,TA cover, and make sure you do not spill any Friction modifier on you,if you have not smelled it yet you will never forget it.

I have the powertrax in my car now. It was real noisy at first but now it is just noisy. It is a real strong peice but you are still using the stock carrier. How strong that is... I don't know.

i got my axles and diff from Downs Ford and Bill Devine told me to get a 31 spline trac lock(from lightning)..he said the auburns are good but you need to beet the snot out of them to get them to work like they are soposed to be

Thanks for all your help

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go Moser 31 spline axles, eaton posi, it seems to me alot of people have been having good luck with that unit. All new bearings, a T/A cover and studs for the caps. I have 3.73 gears I think I might step up to 4.10 as long as it's all apart. I'm a pretty good mechanic but the whole carrier bearing shim preloading gear lash measuring thing is hard to get perfect haven't quit figured out all the cool ways to line up the dial indicater and make perfect preload measurements. I got real lucky with my motorsport gear set used the same carrier shims and pinion shim, no noise no proplems. Still learning!

That's what I run. A 31 spline f-150 diff, 31 spline moser axles, downs girdle, etc.

Oldschoolpony 07-25-2002 11:02 PM

eaton. hmmmm

I dont know, rebuilding an eaton is just about as costly as replacing it entirely. And the eaton unit is not as strong as the Auborn Pro. Even the eaton dealers will tell you that. As for my set up. I'm using 31 spline Moser axles. motorsports C-clip elimantors, Richmond 456 gears, timkin bearings. bilet Cap on ring side. T-A rear girdle and an auborn pro.

Auburn PRO?

I was leaning towards the auburn pro myself before I read alot of posts here. I had an regular auburn in my 90GT the posi worked great for 4 years then started to slip and spin only one wheel. But that had alot of hard launches with slicks on it! If you have had good solid launching with your auburn pro OLDSCHOOL I think I'll take my chances with the Auburn Pro I really wouldn't be into rebuilding the eaton anyways. If I shatter the Auburn Pro maybe I'll try something else, THANKS AGAIN!!!

when you guys are talking about using a differential out of a lightning, would one out of a 96 1/2 ton ford truck work?? i know it's an open differential 8.8 that accepts 31-spline axles.. will that be good for an 11 sec car??
