How Much Faster?
Okay, after going to the track, and running 34 more times, I have yet to better my 14.1, and I have even added tires, 275/40/17 Drag radials out back, and 15x5 skinnies up front. The best I have been able to get since that first time was a 14.25!!! After struggling with this horrible tranny I decided to buy a used 5-speed and all the parts to install it.
My first question is, how much would it ost to install it? Right now I might not be able to do it at home, so my only other choice to get it done quickly is to pay for it. My second question is, with Quick Time Pros, what times should I expect. I have heard of some guys gaining .80 from this swap, I just want to go mid to high 13s, is that possible? Thanks for your help! |
Noone has done a 5-speed swap and seen the difference. I am looking forward to running and would like to get a number to shoot for to see if my driving is up to par!

AOD to T-5 benefits
You'll probably see about a half-second reduction in your et but the trade-off is that you'll have a tougher time launching without excess wheelspin and you'll need a PRO 5 0-type aftermarket shifter and plenty of practice to get the maximum out of the 5-speed.
The reduced et is worth it but nothing is hassle-free. |
Yeah, what he said. Mr. 5.0 is on the money as usual, and I'm just writing this to give you an opinion from more than one person for your peace of mind.
Driving an AOD is slower but easier to launch BY FAR! A T-5 is more fun to drive and can net you much quicker times IF you can launch and shift well. It'll take a lot of practice to perfect it for your car, but practice makes perfect. My suggestion would be to not powershift it until you feel more comfortable with the new tranny. |
Thanks, thats what I expected. I have only raced a 5-speed once, and because it was my dads, and he was in my car next to me, I didn't do so hot. I bogged off the line, had a nice 1-2 shift, a good 2-3 shift, although the tires did spin some, and I went for 4th and it didn't engage fully, so I put it in neutral, and ran a 15.1 at 68!!! I think other than the 4th gear I shifted pretty hard, and clean.
I will be getting some Quick Time Pros on 15x8 or 9 Welds, so the launch will not be too hard to do. I also plan on a Tach w/ lite, a Pro 5.0 shifter, and to rebuild the posi in the rear.. I figure by the time it is installed, and ready to run, it will be next season and I will have had some practice with shifting. Normal driving is a peice of cake with the stick it's just the quick shifting I will be working on!!! And lanching my AOD is flooring it and hearing a slight slip of the tires. It's too easy, it was more fun when it spun the tires!!! |
