headers

I want to buy a set of headers for my 91 LX 5.0. I have decided to redo the entire exhaust. I'm going with BBK headers, hpipe and flows for catback. But, I'm not sure what kind of headers to go with; full length, shorties unequal or shorties equal. Can anyone explain what the different uses for each type are?

As of now my car has minor mods, but next summer I am going to rebuild the engine with new heads, intake, forged pistons, and cam.

Ok, I will try to explain this the best I can, but I am no expert, so if I am wrong, someone correct me.:D Shorty Headers will give you more top end power, and are a lot easier to install. Long tube headers are a pain in the you know what to install, but supposedly can give you more power as you do more mods later on. If I was you, I would go with the shorty headers as they are easier to install, and probably alot cheaper than long tube headers. Just be sure that the Jet Coating on the headers is good quality, so that it will not get warped from the heat. Some good header manufacturers to check out are JBA Headers, and BBK. Hope I was able to help you out.

Go with the BBK shorty unequels. Easiest to install and great quality. I have the exact setup you described and it sounds great.

IMO, if your going to re-do the whole exhaust system anyways, go with the longtubes. They are better for power on the top end (due to the scavenging effect of the collectors) and you won't lose a lot of bottom end. Like 1hot5.0 said, they can be a pain to install and you will have to get/build a new H or X intermediate pipe, but it will be done right and you won't have to worry about your exhaust for a long time.

Prices

I don't want to correct 1hot5.0 but as for the prices, there isn't much of a difference. I am in the exact same place you are and have the exact same questions. If you go to brothersperformance.com, the combined price of the shorties with the full Hpipe or the long tubes with the shorter Hpipe is only $10. The long tubes are more expensive but the shorter Hpipe is cheaper and the end result is the whopping $10 I just mentioned. Knowing that fact is making my decision more difficult. I was going to go with shorties for price but now I may go long. I still don't know and I've been doing constant research for a month now.
