It's very important to soak the friction plates in friction modifier for at least 15 minutes, but 2 hours would be better.

There's a special tool for checking to see what size shims to use, but you can probably just put in the biggest shims and try to rotate them into the carrier housing. If they don't go, drop to the next biggest size. Mine went in with the biggest shims.

Gear oil really stinks. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Use two 2" hose clamps to compress the S-spring before you pound it back into the carrier. Use tin snips to cut them off. It makes the job much easier. Also check out the altenating clutch pack method instead of the factory method. Mine is TIGHT!

Sometimes the 5/16 bolt that holds the cross shaft in place is a b**ch to remove. Make sure to use a box end wrench (not an open end) to prevent from rounding the bolt head. If it doesn't want to turn, heat the area with a small torch, and then try again. If you round the head, you're done for the day. This happened while I was trying to redo the cluctches on my Lightning. Send me a private message if this happens and I'll tell you what we had to do http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif.

Use a 5/16" 6-point socket to remove that bolt mentioned above.

I was able to get the spring back in by compressing it in a vice and then sliding the carrier housing on top of the spring. Once you get it started, you can tap it in with a hammer.
