Gears
I want to put 3.73's in my Stang it is an 88 LX 5.0. What is involved , how difficult is it and what size rear is in this fox body style stang. And is there a certain brand of gears that are better. THanks

Your stang has an 8.8" rear. If you are not familiar with the procedure it is not something you want to try yourself. Improperly setting the backlash can easily destroy the gears and differential. Can't go wrong with genuine Ford gears.

Gear info
You have the standard 8.8 inch rear; probably the 2.73 ratio gears.
The Ford Racing gears are fine; I have them and so do thousands of others. About $200. most everywhere. Have a pro do the job; shop around for prices but get someone experienced in installing diffs. Should cost around $150. - 200. Your price may vary. The gears are a good investment and will reward you with a Mustang that feels as if it gained 40 HP - without touching the engine. |
...my two cents: Ford gears are just fine. I've used Richmond as well in other cars with great success and no problems.
Last week I was quoted $130 for installation (plus additional costs because of the read disc brakes and speedo calibration). To calibrate your speedometer, you'll need to replace the drive and driven gears (speedo cable and tailshaft). The gears are about 7-10 bucks each. The speedo gear is a simple in and out procedure, but the tailshaft gear is much more involved and another thing better left to your installer. With the speedo calibration, I was quoted a total of $300.00 labor. That's 300 plus the 160 for gears (shop around online!)plus the install stuff, so you could be looking at about 350-400 bucks without disc brakes. Very well worth it. |
