freshly polished alumminum....??
 

i just polshed my upper intake, egr spacer, and THB. I was wondering if i should coat it with something like a clear coat of krylon high temp clear coat or if polish will hold up and keep it looking mirror like? I would hate to got to all that work and have it all go down the tubes. I am about to bolt this sexy looking beast back on and would apprecieate any advice you would have in protecting my fresh alum. shine!

What you you guys use? It seems clear coat would be the best way to go but i would rather hear from experience.

You would be best off if you took it to a body shop and had it clear powder coated. You could go ahead and shoot it with the krylon stuff. I don't know how well it will hold up though.

yikes i wonder what the price on somthing like that would run at a body shop. That would be ideal.

Just keep it polished. Clear coats go yellow real quick in the engine compartment.

hmm what about polishes? Mothers? Never Dull? Maas?

Just use the same thing that you would use on polished aluminum wheels. Mothers and Eagle One aluminum polish both work well. Stay away from never dull. It works, but it is messy as hell and is really designed for polishing copper and brass.

I wouldn't use any clear coat for the same reason PKRWUD stated, also... once that stuff starts to chip, it just looks plain ugly as opposed to some polished alum. that is starting to get a bit dull.

I use some stuff called "OUATER" ...not sure if I spelled it correctly, but it is pronounced 'water' and works pretty good on my Bogarts

I dont know anything about the polishing question, but Ultraflo, that car is sweet. Very close to what I want mine to be.

I have just about everything polished in my engine compartment, The best thing you can do is put a coat of wax on everything to keep the water from oxidizing when it dries up. I wipe down the whole engine compartment after every wash. I use mothers pure carnuba wax on my stuff, and it makes it a snap to clean.

About the wax, now that you mention it, when I received my polished Meziere elec. water pump there was some information regarding the finish included with the instructions. Something to the effect that they put a coat of wax on the polished surface to maintain it's finish and prevent water spots, etc. and that I should go back over from time to time to keep the factory polish like new... well, too late, but it still looks good.

I'd much rather prefer wax to a clear coat that is going to yellow, chip, and/or spider web on you... leave it natural :)
