Tire Advice Please!!!

I'm getting ready to buy 255/40/17 and 275/40/17 tires for my 17X8" front and 17X9" rear Bullitt Mustang wheels. Last time I bought tires I did not do enough research, and I got Kumho Ecsta Supras thinking they would be fine for straight/off-the-line traction. They obviously aren't. Any advice on a good tire for off-the-line traction with reasonable durability (20k miles or so) would be greatly appreciated. I've heard good things about the Nitto NT-555 Extreme Radials (not the drag radials), and the Bridgestone Potenzas. Thanks a lot,

The Nitto 555 Extreme Radials, Bridgestone Potenzas, Michelin Pilots, and BFG Firehawks are all good compromises (but not replacements for) drag radials.

I have 285/35/ZR18-W Nitto 555 Extreme's on my car, and I love them.... They do very well in holding ground during cornering, just as good for off the line (still not as good as slicks, but you have to decide what you really want?... Longer treadlife comes at a price, as does more traction) I would advise against getting the 555R Drag Radials, they will give you the best traction off the line, but be prepared to replace them after about 10K mi of "highway" driving. The only reason I would get the Drags is if you have two sets of wheels, and can take them off when not going to the track. The 555Ex I have should last about 30K, given I don't act dumb and boil them over at ever light...

A friend of mine has a 97 Z28 6spd with the Potenzas in it, he can rip off low 13's in his car with little to no spin.. On the street when I ride with him, they seem to hold about the same as they do on the track, they may slip some, but not like other tires..
