New Female member here with a question...
 

Hey all! I'm a girl in need of some advice. I'm restoring a 1984 Mustang Convertable GT and the top is in need of replacing. I've already taken everything apart and ordered the new top. How difficult is it to replace? Are there any suggestions, or any threads I can reference for directions on how to do this???? I'll post some pics on here soon..I've already got the car painted!!! The interior is completely taken apart and I'm redoing that as well. I'm having a Ford mechanic friend of my rebuild the engine and beef it up quite a bit. Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!:D

Are we just talking about the fabric and back glass or the whole mechanism?

If it's just the top, I can send you the instructions from my 89 shop manual. I think all the tops are the same for Fox bodies. As far as tools go, you definitely need a 1/4" crown air stapler.

And it's just the fabric and glass, not the whole thing. That works just fine. I think I'm going to be needing some sort of weatherstrip goop to, at least that's what I've found from the old one.

I had mine done... way to much work involved in doing it at home...

you might check the weatherstripping across the front of the top too... and replace it at the same time...

Thanks anyways guys...JimBerg sent me some instructions, and i think I'll try using them. Appreciate all the help. I'll post a pic when I have it done!!!

Replacing a convertible top is a daunting task even for an experienced mechanic. Most of us would tackle repairing or replacing the frame and or lifting mechanisim, then send the car to the upholstery shop to get the fabric replaced. Most of the finer points of installing the fabric falls under "art work" though if you feel you can do it, go for it, it always feels better when you did the work yourself.

Well, I'm a graphic artist & web designer by trade, so I should be artistic enough to do it I guess....:D

I think you can handle it.. my buddy did his at his house..
