FINAL WORD, air silencer in or out

I have read too many things on here to take it out cause it doubles the size of the hole that the air comes in and its like breathing through puckered lips and then i heard to leave it in cause someone did a track test and they got better time with the air silencer left in someone please clear this up for me, thanks

take it out, i see no way it could hurt performance.

I agree....especially if you have a K & N filter. More air could never be bad...

Badass_yellowGT 08-25-2002 11:58 AM

take it out make the car sound better and as stated above with a kn filter and won`t hurt and if you don`t like it it`s easy enough to put back in

i cane barely hear it, if youre not listening for it, you wont her it, i guess it could be due to high flow cats and dynomax mufflers though.

Before I put my C&L on, I modified my air silencer...
Cut a little off the end and use a 4" tube to reach into the fender, worked for me...a noticeable improvement. (the tube gets placed inside the silencer)

Try it and watch during the upper RPM's, they climb a little faster without the silencer.

My experience.

i took mine off, put a k&n on cut the snorkel tube?- added an extra piece off hose, i get better preformance & gas milage, my k&n is inside the fender, it's the one for drag racing, i plan on making a tube to stick it out side. but it's better than the stock. :)

Take it out and throw it in the garbage. It's a proven bottleneck.

Dark_5.0 08-26-2002 08:22 AM

I run 2 mph faster with mine in. If you remove it you suck in Hot air.

Works for me,

96_4.6 08-26-2002 03:50 PM

Ha theres no end to this, esandes says throw it in the garbage and the other 6 above say take it out and dark 5.0 says he ran 2 mph faster with it in, hmmm there is a huge gap for the hot engine air to go in so i figure block that gap or just leave it in, anyone else please??? thanks

cut it in half, that way its still in the fender but has a bigger opening.

Your car is in motion about 70% of the time...I don't think that alot of hot air is going to be in the compartment while your moving.

Modify that puppy if your worried about hot air...

Haha, that's good...do that, it made me laugh.

I guess its fairly evident that either way, you're not picking up much....

My opinion: Buy a K&N replacement filter and leave the silencer in... Just my opinion... ;)

Drewkeen 08-26-2002 09:34 PM

well i already did it, no joking, but i decided just to take it out, those ounces i save made me pick up 2 tenths in the quarter, lol

I think my 97GT felt stronger with the silencer removed but my 99 Cobra is stronger with it in. You could really hear it on the GT. I can not hear it suck air in the Cobra like in the GT. The Cobra was hot when I tried it so it might run better removed when it is cold.
