timing 1 notch off??

i'm thinking my timing is 1 notch off.. i have an 87' 2.3L EFI..
i can set the timing as far as 30 degrees BTC without any pinging. and if i set it any lower then 20 degrees BTC its REALLLLLLLY slow and slugish. whats the deal?

Sorry buddy I'm not sure how the 2.3L works but on a 5.0 you should set the timing at 10 degree's. You have to remove the SPOUT connector to adjust the timing, otherwise the timing your reading is what the computer is doing. But this is for a 5.0, once again I'm not sure about a 2.3L

did your belt jump a tooth? sounds like valve timing or maybe you didnt put it into base timing. i dont know your extent on how much you know about cars in general, but if you are a beginner, check what i said above,

start over from the beginning...

if you think you are off, nothing we can say will change your mind..

so pull the dist, set #1 to TDC. and start the game again.. If there are doubts, it's tough to diagnose a problem without makin sure, step #1 is correct!!
