Traction lock v. Limited Slip?

I've read a lot of people talking about putting a limited slip in their cars, and I was under the impression that I already had one.

I've got the window sticker here, but the cars in the shop this weekend. It says I have a 'traction lock' rear end, is this different than a limited slip?. I'm also thinking I may have 3.08's at least, if not a 3.27, since I don't think you could get 2.73's with the trac-lock.

I would just crawl under the car to read the code, then light 'em up to see what kind of marks I leave, but I guess I'll have to answer my question this way for now.

traction lok is what ford calls limited slip! Just look on the liitle tag on your diff. it will say like 3L27 or 3L08, L=Limited slip ##'s are gear ratio! If you have an open diff. it will have a "O" for open diff. As far as i know all the newer stangs have limited slip!!

hehe, Josh is gonna be nit picky. But if you have a open differntial......it won't have a "O", just "3 55". There will be a space between the numbers.

I'll retire now that I've been a ***:D

If I ever get the darn car back I'll post which rear end I've got. I'm so tired of not having this car. Especially after spending all weekend at a car show.

i bought my 2k it has trac lock & it's a 2: 73 if you look under the hood on the pass side there is a big block there, all the brake lines run into it, if it break's traction on one wheel it brakes on that wheel & the other takes over, plus cut's out some engine power, i usually turn mine off, unless it rains. :)

Crazy old man:rolleyes: . That's traction control. We car talking aboutTrac-Lok rear-ends, ie the limited slips in stangs. Take you walker and hobble to the store for some new hearing-aids.:D:D :D

At least its a locker

So I got the car back today, Yippie.

I've got a 2:73 locker out back. Now I'm wondering, if I swap in a new gear, do I lose my limited slip? I'm thinking no, but I have precious little expreince with rear ends.

If I do, I'm not going too radical, 3:55 or 3:73, at most. I would just like a little extra kick, I find myself doing 65 in 4th and fifth a hardly useable gear under 80.

What do you think?

No you won't loose your posi. I would got with at least 3.73's....I personally would get 4.10's. The difference between 3.55's and 4.10's is only 500 rpm.

Thanks Josh.

I don't think I;'m doing any mods until the spring. I'm debating between building a car and buying a Cobra in a couple years. If I build something, I'll put gears and exhaust on this one. If I don't, I'm going to save every penny I can.

I think.
