Supercharger vs. Blower
I was just wondering the difference b/w the two (if there is one) and which is better.

OT-Ramblin' Wreck G Tech - FROSH????
Cool good to see the ACC in the house. NCSU alumni so I got few years on ya. Ok about the terminolgy. Some would say a blower means ROOTs type and Supercharger speaks to the centri type. Tomato vs. tomatoe. Whatever??? The question should be the differences in Superchargers and Turochargers. Then the differing types of Superchargers. |
Blower is just slang for supercharger
|
Ok, then what's the difference b/w a supercharger and a turbocharger?
|
They are both similar in that they are both forced induction systems, but the simplest way to explain the difference is that a supercharger gets its power from the engine (through the use of a pulley) while the turbocharger gets its power from the exhaust system. A turbocharger is suppose to be more efficient, but with all of the turbocharged cars I've driven in, the power doesn't really kick in until high rpms whereas a supercharger provides a more all-around power increase.

Well, down here.. We actually use the terms a little differently.
We say blower to mean Roots Types We say superchrger to mean Centrifugal Types and the other is normal. Turbo means Turbo If I were you, I would read up on the two type of forced systems and their sub types. Belt driven are cheaper but are parasitic to the engine. Gas driven are more expensive, but cause less of a parasitic load.. It's all about what you want and how much you want to spend. |
Which would you recommend. The '03 cobra's went vortec blowers, should I follow in the footsteps of SVT?
|
Umm.. I don't think the 03's have Vortech's... They use Roots Type Blowers, and from the reviews and the one I saw in the show room I believe it's an Eaton

I think the Eaton is the exact blower for the job. They have proven to last well over 100K miles, and it gives the Cobra the big torque and nice HP it needs to run mid 12's on street tires. The Eatons job is to be affordable, reliable, and emissions compliant. Exactly what it is.
Car manufacturers don't care about peak HP numbers that a "better" blower would give. They care about selling cars and making them last 36K w/o having to replace the motor or blower assembly. |
