50 Hp
I recently purchased a 01 GT Coupe with a 5 speed. I want to get up to 310-320 HP (Two Guesses Why), but I do not want to have to adjust things every weekend. This has to remain my daily driver. Help.

Get a Saleen blower. About 360hp, and very low maintenence.
|
You're not getting there with simple bolt ons...like 91lx suggested, you'll need a blower, or a small 50 shot of nitrous. Just get a supercharger and a really good chip/dynotune. Run small boost, and be safe about it.

Stock: 260hp
Off-road h-pipe and cat-back: 280-285hp 100hp shot of N20: 370-375 There.....LS-1 killer. While your at it go ahead and add gears while you at it and drop about .4-.5 tenths in the 1/4 mile |
How much is the Saleen blower? I would love to put one on my cobra.
|
To get to your hp goal you would need every bolt-on and a set of cams. Like Stoplight Warrior says, by the time you spent your money on all that you would wish you had just bought a blower and ended up with more power for similar money.

Dark_5.0 - The Saleen blower is only for 2V's. 96-98 is $3600, 99+ is $3239.
The Series II Supercharger Kit includes the Saleen Series II Blower (Eaton M90S roots,) Intercooler, Heat Exchanger, Intake and all hardware (like injectors, etc.) The Saleen blower won't make the huge power #'s like the centrifugal superchargers, but it makes a great setup for a dialy driver. Of course, low end is improved substantially, and increased maintenance is basically a none issue. 360HP will put you well past most most cars in terms of power and accelleration. And if down the road 360HP isn't enough for your daily driver, you could always add a 90mm MAF from a Lightning and the biggest TB you can fit on there (you want as little restriction on the intake side of a Roots blower as possible) and release some more hp. Later you can add a better fuel system, exhaust, turn up the boost a little, and get a dyno tune and probably eek out another, what, 40-50hp+. But remember, it won't make near as much power as a centrifugal blower with the same exhaust/fuel system mods, I just wanted to make sure you know you could upgrade it if need. But the main focus of a Roots blower is reliablity and ease of maintence. Saleen Blower for '01GT |
Vortech SC
JT - I've got a Vortech S-Trim (cetrifugal) SC and it is great. Zero maintenance. It is on my daily driver and I've had no issues at all with it. With just the SC upgrade I've got an exta 100 hp. It was $3800 including installation. With this upgrade, gears and exhaust the car is a freaking scarey beast! It's great. I no longer fear the F-bodies (though SS's give me a good run for my money)!

Dark checkout this site to read more about the saleen superchargers they come with an intercooler too. I wouldn't buy one from here though look around for a better price!!
See Ya, Karen http://www.saleen.com |
I just gave the Saleen supercharger as an example because I think its such a complete kit and a great street setup for such a good price. It can be had for under $3200 for the 99+.
Allen Engine Development (AED) has released an intercooled setup for the 99+GT's also. Its another Eaton setup that makes a great street package IMO. AED supercharger My friend A-train has a stock 99GT engine in his Tbird running and AED and he has gone 12.8's. Figure thats an auto car running about 400lbs more weight. So there is potiential for a mid-low 12sec Mustang with one of these. Of course, if you want to look seriously into blowers, you should not leave out checking into the big names like Vortech, Paxton, ATI (Procharger,) etc. So, to reiterate, 310-320Hp will take a ton of bolt on's and it will just be much easier and much more of a streetable package if you went nitrous or forced induction. |
Tireburner - SS's with just basic mod's are very fast (airbox, exhaust work and other little Chevy stuff) and they can run low 13's, say 13.2 to 13.4. I'll run 13.0 to 13.2 (I'm the weakest part of my car, out of about 50 runs I've only broken 2.0 twice for a 60' time, a high 1.8 and a high 1.9). I know my car has upper 12's in it for sure, I just need to keep practicing (I've only been to the track 4 times since having the SC installed. Anyways, enough of my excuses. SS's can be VERY fast with just basic mods. Stock SS's I have no problems with. I raced an SS a while ago at an 8th of a mile track and his end time was over 88 mph (shocking!, and this guy said his car was stock, which I doubt because I have raced many stock SS's and never lost, except to this one). I can't remember his end time, but this SS pulled me down in the end! We both had poor hole shots, but once my car is out of the hole and I've got the lead I have never had anyone catch me (it takes no skill to keep your foot planted) and this guy did. Remember stock SS's come with 330 HP. My stock GT came with 260 hp. My SC only gives me about 80 rear wheel hp, which brings me to about 340 hp, not too much over an SS.

apenn,
An SS does not have 330 rwhp, nor does a GT have 260 rwhp. These numbers are taken at the flywheel. According to MM&FF the post 99 GT has just under 220 rwhp. This is a loss of about 18%. So assuming an SS is somewhere in that same nieghborhood it probably puts out 265 to 270 rwhp. You know what I'm sayin... |

I know, I know
Topchef - I know, I know they are not rwhp numbers, I just wanted to show the difference between the two cars stock, especially how much more powerful the GM's are.
Noob - How much would what cost? |

Your not going to add 30hp with an H-pipe and catback, but you can release up to 15hp with those mods.
Cost is hard to say because there are $150 aluminaized offroad H-pipes, and $500 SS X-pipes with cats. It all depends what you want. And catbacks usually range from $300-600, again, depending on what you want. Toppchef - LS1 SS's usually dyno between 290-300 rwhp, stock. And I have heard of a few cars going over the 300rwhp, so the 330hp rating may be even a bit conservative. The only GT that sucks up 18% through the driveline is going to be an auto. Manuals are closer to 12-15%. |
guys, i went to dyno day for an f-body meeting with my brother, most of the LT1s were in the range of 235-260 rwhp, all the ls1s were between 280-325 rwhp, so there is a big difference in power numbers, the lt1s were modded but a majority of ls1s had only catback and an airlid, thats some serious power. I knew a guy that had a stock SS with 300 Rwhp
