Carbureted 347 questions

Hi all. I just laid out a small fortune for an all forged rotating assembly for my new 347 stroker that is being built soon. I haven't decided on a cam yet, whether it's going to be a custom grind or an off the shelf profile. I do know that I will be running AFR 185's that will be port matched to the intake manifold. Compression will be around 10:1. I'm seriously contemplating yanking the EFI in favor of a carburetor. I already have a Barry Grant Sports Claw 750cfm I saved from my old Chevelle. I have no objections to running a carb, especially since I'm much more familiar with tuning them than I am with EFI. Here's the questions:
1) Does the 1995 EEC-IV control anything other than sensors and such on the motor? I have a stick car and I don't believe the computer has any type of control over it. The speedo is mechanical so I see no problem there. I'm wondering if it is as simple as it seems to go with the carb and just yank the computer altogether. Obviously, I'll have to pick up an aftermarket ignition.
2) Any one running a carbed motor that can make some fuel system suggestions, please go right ahead. I'm thinking I'll HAVE to run an external pump/filter.
...anyone who has run EFI and switched to carburetion and vice versa, please let me know how your overal performance changed. I'm also looking to hear how the EFI to carb swap went for you.
Thanks all!

you'll have to change a few things... distributor...fuel pump and pickup.. etc...

My friend has a forged10:1 347, trickflows fully ported, not matched to a vic. jr intk, 650 holley, full exhaust, msd, b-cam, race weight around 3050 he went 12.00@115 no powershifting since the t-5z is dying.
Id have to look at his fuel pump, but i know it is a carter external pump that i can hear whineing pretty loud, with an inline filter, dont know about underneath.
I like efi cars, and own one, but my next project might be a carbed 347 or 351, because of the power they make.

hope that might have helped.:)

Thanks coupe. That helped greatly. Any information you may be able to get about the car would be awesome. You can e-mail me at todd5874@hotmail.com if you can come up with any particulars. Really appreciate it!

You will spend much more money if you stay FI. I wish that I went to the carb from the start. IMO if you have the carb use it.

WADS56, I agree 100%. I'm trying not to let cost interfere too much, but it's hard not to when you consider how large the cost difference will be:
Carb: FREE, already have it.
Intake: $260.00 port matched and cleaned up
Fuel pump/filter/lines/regulator/fittings: $500.00
Ignition/distributor: $350.00
Not too bad...
EFI: Pump, injectors, regulator, manifold, TB, MAF, dyno tune/chip burn...almost $2,000.00

The thing that's urking me though, is the cutting of the wiring harness. It seems that once it's done, there's no turning back...

Still, that's a lot LESS money to build it carbed and that much less time it will take to get it on the road.

Thanks for the opinion.

Do not need new fuel pump

Todd95GT,
You do not need to swap your fuel pump to change to a carb. All you need is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Mallory makes one that worked really well on my swap, I believe it adjust from 0-60 lbs or more but I'm not sure I will have to check. I still have the box in my shop so I will get back to you on the part number. I picked up the line at the filter and ran it to the regulator and then to the carb. You will also need an inline fuel guage so you can set the pressure.

Yes.

Ford_Racer, thank you. I'd appreciate that. I didn't realize we could use the FI style regulators to adjust the pressure down to the lower numbers the carbs use. My e-mail address is in one of the above posts. Thanks guys. Your help is really appreciated.
By the way Ford_Racer, what setup are you running? What did you do about the wiring harness and retention of the factory computer?

Coupe50h 09-09-2002 09:49 PM

todd my friend actually still has some of the ecu wiring in the kick panel, even his eecv tester connector under the driverside hood, of course it doesnt work,
your efi harness will have to be pulled out of the engine compartment, before you do this make sure you made your mind, it isnt easy to convert back to efi from what i hear.
