Transmission problem, please help! PKRWUD!!
I just switched from a T-5 to a C4 with a 3500 converter. At part throttle it shifts from 1-3 very early. Like 50 ft. from the light. At WOT the 1-2 shift is just firm, not a kick in the butt, and it flares on the 2-3 shift.
The I tried manually shifting each gear around 4000 rpm, at very light throttle. 1-2 shifts fairly firm, and it it still flares/slips going into 3rd. This may also have something to do with it. At idle the transmission is quiet. But when I put a load on it, (driving, footbraking,..) it makes a rapid ticking sound. Not horribly loud, but definitely audible. I have no clue when it comes to automatics, but I was guessing (hoping) that maybe the trans filter is clogged, causing the pump to cavitate and tick, also causing low line pressure that would give me a mediocre 1-2 shift, and the slip in 3rd. I bought the trans from a Corral member, and he says it is fresh, with only a few thousand miles on it. I am waiting for an email reply from him about the history of the transmission. Thanks for any help you can provide. Rob |
Rob,
The 2/3 flare is common on a c-4, get a good valve body and be done with it. PA's full manual reverse valve body will do the trick. Is the valve body a manual/automatic or a full manual? It's hard to get away from the flare with a manual/automatic. I've had friends go round and round with different companies and they seem to have the best luck with PA. As far as the tick I haven't a clue. |
What brand converter is in it? Is it a lockup or non lockup converter?
|
It is a TCI converter. As far as the valve body goes, it is a stock valve body with a shift kit.
I am going to do a line pressure test to be sure that all the circuits have proper pressure, then try a full manual VB I guess. I kinda like leaving it in drive though...:( |
Does a reverse manual valve body reverse the shift pattern? In other words, will I have my shifter in 1st, when the trans is in park?
Thanks. rob Shackleton |
No, it would be prn123. You pull back instead of pushing forward. Only draw back on this imo is at the top of the track you are no where near neutral! I'm not sure if any companies make it for the c-4, but one of my buddies has a 727 behind his 383 and you can toss it up from third without it braking the engine. Not exactly sure what the technical term is for the valve body other then it's a reverse full manual.

TCI makes a reverse manual and a regular full manual VB. I wouldn't buy one though. I had big problems with the one I had in the past. Wound up having to send the VB back to them for another one. It came messed up from TCI. Then I had problems getting my shipping money back from them. It was just a hassle. I won't even go into the other troubles I had with them.

I have read that all manual VB's are not the same. I called PA today, and they can make me one that keeps the standard shift pattern.
