I need some heads, what kind?
Okay so i blew a head gasket while overheating one day and i think one of the heads is cracked. I'm having them tested now and if one is cracked, im gonna go ahead and buy a set of performance heads for the car. Now im on a VERY limited budget (as in the new heads are gonna hafta be financed threw a loan at the bank). With this in mind, I can't really go over 1000 dollars and the farther under that i go the better. I was thinking a set of gt40p heads, ported and polished and if possible used. The 1000 dollars has to be for everything though, including new gaskets, new head bolts, new spark plugs if nessacary, and every other nickel and dime thing that could be involved with a head install. I will be installing them at home with some help so i don't need to include mechanics charges. So your opinions on where and what kind i should buy.....

i forgot to mention new roller rockers and lifters would have to be included in that also...

Power Heads.COM
Check out power heads .com they cnc machine the stock e7te heads and put bigger valves. I think there the best buy for a low budget. I think they cost $695 complete. Check out there site for the stats on these heads.

World Products
Look in Summit at the World products cylinder heads, some call them Dart II's or Dart Senior, they are cast iron, have a 2.02/1.60 valve package, and they can grow with the car they cost about 799,you might have to save a little bit extra to buy rocker arms but they are a nice set of heads.

What heads to use
Hey, I am using Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Heads. They cost about 1100.00. I ported these myself to the FelPro 1262 gaskets which makes the port 1 5/8 x 2 1/8 inches. With a really mild cam, 278 duration .478 intake an .498 exhaust, the car runs 14.00 flat with 3.25 gears.
I really love these heads, they perform much like the 4V Clevelands breathing wise, but have low end torque. By the way, the Boss 351 is the fastest tested ford engine at 14.3 et. My engine has less cam and runs 14.00 flat. So go with the trick flows and enjoy yourself. email me at jim_howard_pdx@yahoo.com if you have any other questions. I am shooting for 13.25 with 4.57 or 4.80 rear gears. I do not have them yet but hope to test these before the rainey season begins here in Portland Oregon. Happy racing. By the way I raced two modern Cobras last night. One ran a 14.85 the other a 15.35 et. Gotta love these Windsor engines! I would really like to try a 250HP shot of nitrous, since I am using a bottom end built for it, but I do not have the guts to abuse the bearings on a daily driver. |
Hey Jim are you at really high altitude?? For a 400hp 358 a 14 flat is really slow. I hope your high up in the thin air lol.

Summit sells GT-40P heads for I think $538 a pair.....fo sho worth looking into

For the money why not just go with Dart??? Look at what the pro's use. You can find some on the net for fairly cheap.

Eric, Darts are wonderful, I know several people running them. Only thing is, with darts you HAVE to buy roller rockers, stud mounted. Yes they have more potential, but you can easily go mid or even low 12s with the POWER HEADS. If money is an issue, he can stilll run the stock rockers untill he wants to spend more money. My self, rather than RRs I would go with a B cam. That is his choice. I'm not sure if the stud mounted RR have to be shimmed, checked, shimmed, checked, ect... If so, that is reason enough to stay away from it. But I do agree, Darts are bad to the bone. Also with GTPs you will need a GTP specific header = more money. No reason to buy a header that only works on 1 head. Just my .02 Good luck
