How important is it to resurface flywheel?
Well upon dissasembly, i found my clutch to be in good shape, pp and disc were fine, the Tob on the other hand, was stuck in the fork, and im still not sure why my pedal had so much slack in it, the tob wasnt able to pivot so maybe that why?
now to the question, my flywheel was resurfaced last year, and it looks/feels smooth (no glazing), my dad, (an old schooler hot rodder) says it will be fine, and said to just bolt my kk clutch up, so thats what i did, now it bothers me, and kind of want a 2nd opinion from you fellas, i guess i'll find out when i get it all together, just got to put the t-5 in, and the h-pip and im back on the saddle.:cool: thanx.... |
It's always a good idea to get it resurfaced but since it was done last year it's probably ok then................probably

My understanding is that you need to resurface it when you put in a new clutch. It has to do with the clutch setting a particular wear pattern or grip pattern on the flywheel. I put a used clutch in my car a few months ago, but I put in the matching flywheel too, so I never worried about it. I just put in a new clutch last week and resurfaced my original flywheel. I guess it'll work without resurfacing it, but that's alot of work to not be sure, and possibly have a clutch that slips at odd times. Just my .02

Are there any other places that resurface flywheels other than machine shops? How much does it usually cost?

O'reily's or autozone should be able to do it... for like $10 bucks or so.. usually they do it for free... Thats how it is in Okla....

Your dad is right. It is preferred to resurface when doing a clutch job, but not required if your flywheel is as you desribe.
just like doing a disc brake job. its preferred to cut your rotors every time, but if they are in good condition, its not required. |
Do you have the stock clutch cable and quadrant? The pedal feel in my car is 100% better now that i put an adjustable quadrant in.

I always get the flywheel resurfaced. Not doing so is a easy way to get clutch chatter. It is cheap insurance to get it done.

Go for the Steeda firewall adjustable quadrant. The aftermarket cables tend to be cheap, I snapped 3 of them. WIth their firewall adjuster, you can adjust the clutch under the hood at the firewall instead of jacking up the car and removing the trans cable cover, makes things real easy, plus, you can save $$$ and use your stock cable. Grc.com also sells them, That is where I got mine. Don't do a clutch with a stock quadrant. |

I have the d&d quadrant and firewall adjuster, i like it alot. my throwout bearing was in bad shape, although it spun freely, it was stuck in the fork to where it wouldnt pivot? i blame that for the hard pedal, my troubles should be over now, it rained today again, but im gonna stab the t-5 tommorrow(weather permitting) and be on my jolly way, if it chatter's then i'll say you told me so, but it looks smooth as new, im not to worried about it anymore, it is cheap insurance to resurface, but it's that much more my pedal has to travel to engage the clutch:p thnx for the opinions they have been very useful. |
