331 or 408

I dont know what to build. here is what I have, 306 (stock block)DSS pistons,TFS heads,Comp cam 620 lift,Cobra intake,D1-X Dynoed at 489rwhp at 4700, right before the stock balancer was no longer connected to the crankshaft. so 331 with SVO block or 408 with 351 block. what do you think.

408 all the way. Have two buddies with 408's. One in a 91 Coupe, and the other one in a 89 GT. 91 runs 6.40's in the 1/8th on a 125 dash of jug, and the 89 runs 5.80's..on alcohol. Car gets driven about twice a week. Both are carb'd motors. I tuned on the 89 and it runs extremely well. 408's are really popular with the windsor guys and they make great hp.

Depends what you are looking for.

Sure the 408 makes great power, so would a supercharged 331.

All things equal, the 408 has the potential to make more power than the 331. But, how much hp do you want. I'm going with a ProCharger D-1SC on my 331 - looking for right around 500 rwhp with a safe tune that I can easily drive on the street and take to strip for fun.

BTW - get a Fluidampr on that beast! :D

Just what Eric said, it all depends on what you're using the car for. If you're just looking for a daily driver with some attitude, a 331 is capable of that. On the other hand, if it's going to be limited to the 1/4 mile, the 408 is the bigger, badder motor. I almost decided on building a 408 but the funds just aren't there, that's why I settled on the 331. I don't know what these 408's are putting out, but my 331 is going to be around 400hp.

The 408 is also stronger then the 331, especially if you get the sportsman or SVO block.

Don't be fooled here, the SVO A4 block is very strong. It's very similar to the new R block, which is also very stout. So, the 331 won't have any block strength issues.

I'm going 418ci with 2 stages of Juice, block strength is greatly improved even with a stock 351 block over the weak production 302. May want to look into the Dart block if you go 331ci, they come machined more so it should be far less then a A4 or R302 block would cost to machine...

There's no replacement for displacement! ...everything else being equal (coming from a guy with a stock block 306) :D

I'd say go 408...

Either are capable of big HP numbers with the proper combination of parts and good tuning... the 408 has more HP potential "right out of the box."

Looks like the 408 has the most votes :) I'm telling ya, you won't be dissapointed in their performance. Their awesome motors.

I guess you get asked that a lot? I just wanted to see pics because it sounds like a very impressive machine. If you don't want to post them, you could e-mail them to me rick91gt@suscom.net
