Not very happy

Well, I'm pretty pissed off. It seems there is a major corporation that owns close to half of the radio stations nationwide, and they have decided it would be nice to have an outdoor concert venue built at the Ventura Fairgrounds. The problem is, however, that there is no room. They have been trying for years to get the fairboard to not renew the lease for Ventura Raceway, the only racetrack of it's kind for over 100 miles in any direction, and demolish it so that they can build their theater. Each year, the fairboard always renews the contract with the racetrack, and all is well.

This year, however, the Governor is up for re-election, and the big-bucks company has become a major contributor to Gov. Davis' re-election campaign. Why is that important? Because in the past few months, the Governor himself has personally appointed 6 new members to the 9 member fairboard, and they are all outspoken against the racetrack.

The vote was to be held yesterday, but so many members of the public showed up in favor of keeping the track, that they postponed the vote for one month. The bottom line is that we are going to lose our racetrack, and it's all because of money. The city will lose money, and the best family entertainment value it has, but that doesn't seem to matter. It just makes me sick.

I love this town more than any other place I have ever been, but crap like this just kills me. Ventura Raceway has been a major part of the community, and a place where families gather on Saturday nights, for over 25 years. This town already has a major concert venue, The Ventura Theater, which has been around forever, and regularly hosts major bands. A new theater is not needed.

Anyway, I just needed to vent about it.

Thanks.

Take care,
~Chris

That's stupid. I would protest. I can't stand ppl that do stuff because of money that destroys "historical" stuff. I was even opposed to the new baseball and football stadium here in Houston. But since I'm only one in a few million, my vote doesn't really count that much

As a former professional pilot, the same situation angers me about small airports. Some have been around for ages, such as your track. The counties issue building permits to build subdivisions at the end of the existing runways.

Stupid people buy these houses without knowing there is an airport there, and then complain about the noise, close proximity to the end of the runways and other stuff.

The next thing you know, they try to close down the airport. They don't build too many small airports anymore, as the cost of land is out of sight. As your track, these businesses bring in a lot of money and offer employment, but it seems the tax base means more to the politicians. Too many politicians are using their personal agends while in office, instead of what the people want. Just another way for them to get fat.

I'm with you agaisnt that company. They own a couple of the stations I used to listen to in SB, and some more that I listen to out of San Diego.

Davis is a moron, and obviously his politcal linings are against motors of any kind. We need to write your congressman, as I am drafting a letter to the distric reps for Carlsbad. I've got a bad feeling that track is going to be on the outs soon too.

And people wonder why street racing is a problem.

Hey Maroon,

Is Lee Field still around in Edgewater?
(Just south of Annapolis)

If you're a pilot and want to get to Annapolis via a small field, that's pretty much the place...

I think it's still operating, been a few years since I've been there.

Chris At first this sounded like the work of Cumulus Media, but a search of them showed they arent that big in California. They are the a holes who bought out Connoissuer Communications a few years ago and eliminated Howard Stern from this area. :(

Maroon The situation you are describing with the airports is identical to what has happened at Byron Dragway. Anyone who's ever been there is familiar with the 6 pm curfew. :(

It is probably Clear Channel.

Damn Democrats! Where is MR. 5.0 when you need him to yell at the democrats lol.

Duece they have been threatening to tear down Carlsbad for who knows how long. I can remember JBA protesting that 4-5 years ago.

Im sorry to hear that Chris, you sound like you have an awesome time with that sprint car team :(

Later,
Nick

I think you may be correct. That name sure sounds right. Bastards.

HotRoddin 09-18-2002 11:41 PM

Pkrwud i've watched them tear down Lions drag strip ... Irwindale Raceway ... Orange County International Raceway ... Riverside International Raceway ... Ontario Motor Speedway ... and they have pretty much stopped everything at Pamona except the Winternationals. I feel your pain !!!
I cannot understand for the life of me why the hell someone would buy a house right next to a dragstrip or racetrack and then turn around and complain about the noise ????

That sucks, man.

I've always thought Davis was a *******' idiot. Just a little puppet who thinks he knows what he's doing. In reality he's just a pawn for any liberal outlyer who wants to pull some strings.

clear channel bought just about, every radio station around here, who are these clown's, what happened to the monoply law?

DRASTiK 09-19-2002 01:56 AM

A very similar thing happened here a few years back. Now the Yuma Speedway dirt track just sits and collects dust. Some rich snob bought it just so no one would use it.

Coupe Devil 09-19-2002 02:37 AM

Move here, we have two nice round track facilities within 30 minutes of my house and within 30 minutes of each other. Great action at both places.

PKRWUD 09-19-2002 03:01 AM

How about you move the tracks here. :p

Okay, how about just one?

;)

Take care,

That sums up how I feel about Davis too. Complete liberal scum.

I believe MM&FF talked about people who live in newer subdivisions near Englishtown wanting to shut down the track. Even though the racetrack has been there since the 60's, long before some yahoo decided to build his 3 bedroom castle next door.

People are morons.

MidNiteBlu 5.0 09-19-2002 12:40 PM

People are idiots when it comes to complaining about noise when the track or w/e was THERE BEFORE THEY MOVED THERE.

I can remember people bitching and moaning about all the helicopter noise from Miramar when the marines moved in. Now this Base has been a Naval Air Station and fighter pilot training base long before anyone started living near it. IF YOU DONT WANT NOISE DONT MOVE NEXT TO A ******* MILITARY BASE STUPID ***.

sorry had to vent lol

Later,
Nick
