302 heads on 351w

Correct me if I'm wrong but I can bolt 302 heads on a 351w without modifications...correct? I know if it was the other way around then the block needs drilled for the larger bolts.
What are some good stock 302 heads to start with? I was told GT-40p heads from the Ford Explorers or GT-40 heads from the Cobra.

I don't know if this still holds true but the intake on a 351 has 8 holddown bolts as opposed to 6 on a 302 ... other than that why are you wanting to put 302 heads on a 351 when there are so many good 351 heads on the market now ?

I don't have tons of cash to spend on heads right now. I figured maybe I could get some GT-40p heads at a salvage yard or on the net and use them. Anything would be better than using the '74 heads I have now..wouldn't it?

Go to some 1st generation lightning sites and check the classifieds for people that have taken the gt-40's off of there 351's.

You listed that you had 69 ported heads ... from the tests i've seen a good port job on a set of 69 351 heads with the 1.94 intake 1.6 exhaust valves flow better all around than GT40 p's in stock form. If thats the case then how much are you gonna gain per dollar spent ?
I'm sure there are people here that will disagree with that but thats my 2 cents worth

'78-84 302's (HO or not) have D8OE heads just like late 70s/early 80s 351w's. I want to say '85's do also. Only problem I can see is that your intake manifold will not line up correctly to different heads. Not sure about exhausts.

Check this table for more info:

When I got this engine a few years ago, I was told it was a '69 block with ported heads and mild cam. Recently I discovered(with the help of PKRWUD) that it's actually a '74 motor. I haven't got the chance to look at the casting numbers on the heads but at this point, I can only assume that they too are also '74 production units.
My car ran strong when I put the engine in about 5 yrs ago.
I blew a head gasket(if you recall) last week and decided to pull the whole engine and start over and put it back together with even a little bit more power this time.
If they are indeed '69 heads then I will keep them, if not, then I need to look for alternatives for the heads I want to use.
