general v8 question

i've come across a 1970 pontiac tempest that i can acquire for a song.......

it runs and drives, but it is an inline 6.......

if i acquire an engine/tranny/rear end for it, what would you consider a fair price to pay for labor to get it all installed?

Rev 10-06-2002 08:09 PM

1970's is smog era stuff

Unless yiu're planning on building the car yourself, I wouldn't even plan on it. Now, if you're putting in a 455 modded with a T-4 and a 10 bolt, you may have something .

between 500-800. it all depends on if you bring your own parts and supplies and if modifications come about.

i've located a rebuilt 400 from a 69 gto along with rear-end............now i'm looking for a tranny.........

i live in an aparment complex and park on the street, so doing it myself isn't really feasible.................i'd planned on something turnkey, but not every day you get a deal on a 1970 tempest.......

also Rev, 1970 is a few years before smog era

srv1 10-06-2002 08:23 PM

also do you have all the accesory brakets for the V8? what about exhaust? that would have to be custom also. what is wrong with the 6? i would run that until you have everything needed for the V8 swap. trust me, it is easier that way.

Parts + labor?

He did say parts + labor. Whenever that is specified, it just means he doesn't have a clue, doesn't it? If he did, he would be asking about conversions and how to do it, wouldn't he?

Nothing against the conversion, he definitely needs it.

i don't have anything yet............

it is just an offer that i can't refuse and i'm kinda thinking out loud/asking for advice..........

Rev, if i had a house and a place to work, i'd do it myself...........i have an apartment and 2 parking spaces on the street

Yes, I've been there and done that back in '71. I had a '71 Fiat 124 Sports Coupe. Weighed 2200 lbs with 105 hp with a 5 speed. Yes I was an an apartment dweller then, so I know what it's like. Wasn't trying to rag on you as some others have done. I personally want you to continue the performance car hobby. Count on me for continued support, but keep it civil.

i'm kinda in a catch-22 situation........

i can:

-buy a house to have somewhere to work on cars, and then not have the time or money to work on cars

or.........

-stay in an apartment and have the money to play with cars, but have nowhere at all to work on them

the only "Nazi car" i can think of is the old Beetle's if you wanted to be technical. i never in my life have had someone spit at me. i honestly would say if some guy did that, even if i am out numbered 3 to 1, i would definetly come out swinging! i wouldnt care how big he is, even if he was as big as Tony Frank i still would come after him. Only if he spit on me. If i wasnt spitted on, then i would walk away if i was out numbered. words i can often ignore, but a total disrespect like that would be uncalled for. only scumbags spit.
