351 vs. 302

I have an 89' GT that I love. I was thinking of building another car to just toy with on the streets and take to the track. Are there any huge advantages to using a 351??? My 302 works great and I run very well with it, but I am looking for some more power. Is the 351 W a bad-*** engine?? I hardly ever hear of fox body Mustangs with 351's (except for the 93' Cobra R), why is that?? Are the parts too expensive, are they not as reliable, too heavy, not enough power?? Please give me your thoughts.

There's no replacement for displacement ;)

More cubic inches = more HP potential ...everything else being equal. Plus, the extra cubes create more torque.

If you want to go with a 351 based motor, then by all means do so... just research all of the mustang message boards. I haven't anything profound to say about the 306 vs. 351. I have fun with my little 306 :)

It all depends on how much cash you've got in that wallet... ;)

its a warrenty thing with engines but build a 351 most parts are
similiar in cost .

93 cobra r didnt have a 351..only the 95 did

93 cobra r was essentially a cobra with things such as rear seat delete, 5 lug conversion and 17" black 3 spoke rims..as far as i know no motor diffrences between the he 93 cobra and the 93 cobra "r"

Beat me too it :)

The 351 is stronger and has more potencial. There are a couple guys on the site who have 351's in a fox.

I had a 351-W in my 1978 Zephyr Z-7 (Fox 3 chassis). Its doable, and you need a handful of extra parts, over just rebuilding your 302. My current combo is an S-trim on a TFS TW 302.

Granted there is no replacement for displacement. You just gott figure in the oilpan, headers, intake and misc minor things.
www.alternativeauto.com has a decent article about this.

The 351 is stronger and more powerful, plus it can be stroked beyond 400 cubes. Go with the 351. You'll be happy you did. I am. If you do decide to do it and need help don't be afraid to shout. I just got "done" with mine and I love it. If you're on a tight budget than it might not be feasible, the 351 swap is a little more expensive, but the results are better if done correctly. There is a fiar amount of research that you'll need to do but that's half the fun:D

Stang ROTY.

I was just wondering. I know that you said that just finished your car and all, so maybe you are still breaking it in? I just thought that you should be getting better times than a 12.9 with your setup. Right now I run anywhere from a 12.54-12.68 with Nitto street legal drag radials. Just curious man, please don't take it the wrong way. I have nothing but respect for Mustangs and their drivers.

My son and I are planning down the road to swap out the motor. We both like the idea of a 351W that you can get some serious hp and torque naturally..

How hard was your swap out? Can you give us an outline of what you had to do to convert to 351?

351 302 swap

Well i am thinking of doing the same thing, i've been researching what its gonna take and i am going to go for it.

I want to have a 351W along with a supercharger, which one im not sure yet but i'll cross that bridge when i get to it.

:D

None offense taken, man.

Honestly, I'm not beating her because I don't have a garage for when something goes boom. I shift anywhere between 5500-6000 but not much more. Remember, I still have the t-brake that I can hook up and some practicing to do. When I built the car I was shooting for a 12 second street car. I could rip out the seats and do other things to reduce weight but right noe I'm just trying to have fun, know what I mean?

I think the biggest thing is that I set up my car for street leagl. Although I have 393 cubes under the hood I'm using all 302 parts, heads, intake, etc. I went to the 351 becuase of the durability of the engine. I don't rev her too high....yet. Longtubes will help also.
