Auto to 5 speed
I have a 1991 LX 5.0 vert with an AOD automatic in it. I really want a t-5 5 speed in my car. What is the absolute cheapest I can do this for including having someone install everything for me? What can I buy used, and what should I buy new? Thanks everyone!:D

Just a very important note for you to remember:
If you also install the ECM from a 5 speed car, make sure you cut and tape the wire that goes to pin #30 at the 60 pin connector. Otherwise, you will fry the new ECM. Take care, ~Chris |

1Hot50, you are better off just selling your car and buying a 5spd. If you keep your car, just get some 3.73's or 4.10's with a nice lockup converter and you will whip 5spds all day and night.

No, not really, the hardest part is putting the new pedal cluster in. I'd say its a weekend job. If you've ever had to change the brake booster, or converted from power to manual brakes, you've done half the job right there.

Its not that much of a pain at all. Just take your time, and its actually a very straightforward job.

I just called a mustang performance ship here and they sell a kit with a used t-5, new clutch (I forgot what he said it was called, but he said it was a little stronger than a king cobra clutch), New bell housing, and everything else I would need for $1,495. To install everything, it would be $560. Is this a good deal?

That sounds like a somewhat reasonable price on the install to have it done professionally, but the kit seems a high.
I did my swap and ended up only out about $200. but I got a good deal on a used T-5 and sold my fairly fresh AOD for $425 I spent $300 on a new clutch kit/fork/pilot bearing/adjustable cable and quadrant, and about another $300 or so on a used T-5, pedals, bolts, and flywheel with resurface I'd estimate it took me a total of about 9-10 hours for the whole swap, although I did a little bit at a time. If I were you, I'd get some friends to come over for the weekend and tackle the job yourself. I've also got a used T-5 that needs synchros, but is otherwise in good shape, that I can sell you for $275 if you decide to piece it all together instead of buying that overpriced kit. |

I would say that is a decent price...Is there any expressed guarentee with the work? Thanks, DoranW |
I didn't ask him, because I am about 4 months off from doing it, but he did say that no one has ever come back with any complaints.... :D

Auto to T5
Hi 1hot5.0,
I too am interested in the swap. Would you mind sending me some of the information you've been able to find dealing with parts lists, companies to get the parts, etc? I'd greatly appreciate it. |
things you need
*tranny *bellhousing *clutch *clutch cable *clutch/brake cluster including the paw and quadrent/or aftermarket one peice metal setup *gas pedal *pilot bearing *shifter *new center boot and trim |
also
* pivot ball for bellhousing (should have one already in a used one) * flywheel, with new bolts * 2 bellhousing bolts, or washers to take up the space in the 2 upper, longer AOD bolts. The other 4 bolts from the AOD can be reused. *Pressure plate bolts, and dowl pins for the flywheel *T-5 backup light wiring harness. This has a jumper for the neutral safety switch and the plug for the backuplight plug on the T-5 *Speedometer gear I think that added to LX XLR8R's list covers pretty much everything It sounds like alot, but its really not. I would suggest maybe finding a wrecked car to part out, or find someone that wants to swap to an auto. This way you know that you'll have everything there. I used to have a great link for the swap, including pictures and a full parts list, but I can't find it now:( |
i knew i missed stuff!

I had access to a car that was being parted out, but it was sold from under me. Does anyone have information I'd be able to find for local (to me) places for parts, cars, etc? I'm in Colorado and I'm having trouble locating local clubs and such.
Thanks again for all the information. Justin |
Whoops, Ill look for a performance shop in your area. Good luck. I am not going to do my conversion until march. If I find anymore info Ill post it.
