Found a scary spider in my house!
Last night I received an estatic call from my mother asking me to come home right away. She said she found a big spider and needed me to take care of it. She is really afraid of spiders and usually a big spider to her is about .25" long. After a few minutes of her begging and pleading, I went home. What do I find? A huge brown recluse spider. For those that don't know, it is a poisonous spider and CAN kill you. The area of the bite gets real big and sore, like 3-4" diameter bump. The venom kills the tissue, and if not treated, gang-green sets in and can spread throughout the body.
My mom had trapped the spider in an upside-down salsa dish. I had to carefully place a piece of paper underneath, and wrapped it around the dish. Now I'm a little squeemish around spiders, especially big, poinsonous ones. So I was decided to be careful and wrapped the paper and dish with saran wrap a few times so I could transport it to the street for a good stomping. http://www.rebel-racing.com/images/spider1.jpg http://www.rebel-racing.com/images/spider2.jpg A few neighbors came out because they heard the commotion of my mom screaming and rasiing her voice and I was threatening to release the spider on her (jokingly) if she didn't reduce my rent. :D All of them were scared at the site of the spider, and none of them wanted to help kill it. Here is what's left: http://www.rebel-racing.com/images/spider3.jpg http://www.rebel-racing.com/images/spider4.jpg |

Looks like a Wolf spider, lots of those things around here. The brown is violin shaped, more slender and no hair.
Either way its a spider and now its my favorite, dead. |
day-um rebel, your mom is lucky, one of those bit my dad on the back of his hand, the stubborn old cod, wouldnt go to the doc, the next day, they cut out a piece of his hand the size of a silver dollar, gangrene. wow.

This reminds me. I was watching a show the other day on spiders and it showed the Funnel Web spiders found in Australia and explained that they were the most poisonous spiders in the world. Then at work a couple days later I noticed a strange looking web inside a wooden box full of scrap parts. The web was shaped just like a funnel. Nobody will touch the box to see what comes out. The funnel part of the web has a hole that goes down into the box as big around as a half dollar. Are there Funnel Web spiders in the U.S.? If so, are they poisonous? I may see if I can capture it tomorrow for some glamour shots.

LMAO @ the spider stomping pics:D :D :D

You showed that spider good!
I hope you didn't tick off his friends!!! AGHHHH! :D PS - Could you come to Austin and squish all the scorpions?!? |
I would of probably been screaming like your mom if I seen that thing. I can't stand those things, I am usually the one calling my mom to kill spiders and we just argue who to kill it. And I live in Canada where they’re not even poisonous.... Glad you took care of him, I would have a hard time sleeping, thinking that there could be more. I watched this one show once and they said you eat like 6 spiders a year without knowing it. One of the most disturbing facts I've ever heard.

Yep...looks like a wolf spider to me as well. Browns are more slender and have somewhat longer front legs.
Got those things crawling all around up here. Mow the yard and you can see the thing running in front of the lawn mower. It's also cool if you can find one with babies. They pile them on their back....hundreds of the little buggers. --nathan |
OH GOD spiders give me the serious heebies.
We're infested with black widows in the carport... I'm always so paranoid crawling under the stang because they looove all the little nooks and crannies there. Black widows aren't as bad as brown recluses or funnel web spiders, but they're enough to keep me on my toes with a can of raid, or hairspray and a match. I hope there are no more around, Scott. Be careful. Here's one that was crawling around the other night in the living room: http://www.joe4speed.com/spider.jpg and this is a black widow in the garbage can from last week!: http://www.joe4speed.com/widow.jpg |
Dam
Back to the recluse,,I had a friend that was bitten on his calf muscle(this was in japan) they figure someone brought it over in there household goods & personal belongings. He was bitten in his sleep ,and before he figured out how bad it was ,the removed a section of that muscle (that you could set a shot glass down in it !!) and took for ever to heal :( So they are nasty ,good job ;)

You guys kill me! :D I used to live (a long time ago) in this BROKE down mobile home. You know, mice, roaches, spiders.... I remember getting my CO2 beebee gun and putting a piece of cheese in the middle of the hall way and waiting for the mouse to come so I could shoot him (had to be patient), but he was too fast. He'd grab the cheese and run b4 I could fire a decent shot :D. One thing that told me that this was the end of living at this place was when I looked in the corner of my room and saw the tail end of a SNAKE slowly slither behind my desk! I verbally said something like "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING!!!! I had my brother scare the snake out from behind the desk and wedge its head up against a box. then I grabbed it by the tail and then the head and took it way out in the woods and threw it in the woods (I happen to kinda like snakes  so I spared its life). BTW, I like scorpions and praying mantises.... :) Good smashing Rebel79, spider-stomping defender of mankind... |
Dear God!!!
I can't stand spiders....and i've never seen something so nasty in person.....
I pray to god i never come across one of those... by the way are they in Southern Cali? i mean SD to be percise....  |
Yes they are in San Diego
I used to live in Escondildo (Escondido, southern CA) and we had black widows everywhere outside. I happened to catch one for a science project in elementry school, but that's another story. Out of about 8-10 years of living there I only ran into 2 brown recluses (sp), so to answer your question, yes they have those spiders there. Not only are brown recluses and black widows there, but as south as you are you have huge wolf spiders, tarantualas, scorpions, and centipedes. Sorry to break the news to you. Take it easy, Keith
|
florida is pretty bad too, we get all that keith said except centipedes (that i know of)...ive seen millipedes though..only seen one scorpion though...i watched it for about 20min (first time seeing one) then squished the crap outta it with a brick..lol...
|
Ive never seen brown recluses, scorpions, or centipedes or Wolf Spiders down here in SD. well at least not here in the city. i have seen many black widows though and of course the normal spiders come in here every once in awhile.

That's a pretty good story Rebel....I would have definitely taken the same amount, if not more, of precautions as you! I HATE SPIDERS! We have black widows and a couple other species of poisonous spiders around here, but most are just harmless house spiders. Some of them fuggers can get HUGE though!
My coolest, and grossest spider experience was this: I was working construction during the summer of 2001. We were on the site about 20 miles west of town on a little old lady's farm. We were redoing the sheeting/siding on her house, along with building a deck and an elevated, wooden walkway through her yard. We were tearing down the old siding, and I ripped a piece of siding down and found a HUGE pinkish/peachish colored spider with what looked like a brown asterisk (*) on the bottom side of it. The "butt" portion (Been a couple years since biology or anything, don't know the technical terms, so BACK OFF!:D:D) was pretty big. It probably had a diameter close to the size of a quarter. After inspecting it for a while and seeing if it was alive (was it ever!), I took my hammer and gave it a good whack, pounding the living **** out of it. The gross thing is that the big "butt" part (shut up, stop making fun of me:D) phrickin exploded! Spider guts were EVERYWHERE! It was like a damn water balloon! My face, hate, shirt, pants, my cousin who was standing next to me, and the surrounding area was covered! It was naaasty! Just thought I'd share... |
