Intake
I met a guy last night at the track that said he had a used cobra intake and a used set of AFR heads. I don't know enough about heads to want to buy a used set from someone I don't know. But the intake is another story. Is there anything I need to look for to insure the quality of the intake? Would the cobra intake make enough of a difference in the power to be worth the $250 he is asking and the effort to put it on? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Caymon |
Does he want $250 for the intake & heads? The heads go new for over $1000, the intake new is 400-500 $$$$, I'd definitely get them. What kind of setup are you running?
|
$250 is just for the intake. I didn't inquire about the heads, wereas I don't feel comfortable buying used ones from someone I don't know. The set-up I'm running is just what you see in my sig. I am just curious if the power gains from the intake are worth the time and money, and if there is anything I need to look for as far as wear and tear on the intake before buying it.
Thanks, Caymon |
grab it it is a good intake for what you have and it can expand well with a mild cam and heads...as for the 70mm TB..LOOSE IT..its way to big..go back to stock..nothing you have can support the power range that it puts you in..
switch back and you will tahnks me..save it for when you get heads and a bigger cam |
Who was this guy, what's his name? I might know him. A cobra intake is a good one to get as well as the heads, but ask the seller to have the heads magnofluxed before the purchase to ensure there are no crackes, the machine shop will check for warpage too as well as valve seals and everything else.

The intake seems like a good deal if its in good shape. You wont feel much, if any, difference just swapping out the intakes. You might consider picking up the intake from him and waiting to put it on until you figure out something to do about your heads. Possibly have your stock ones ported, or maybe pick up some gt40 irons if your on a budget and do everything at once. I also agree on dumping the 70mm tb, its too big. - John

Will it pose a negative effect if I go back to my stock throttle body ad keep the 70mm egr spacer? I have no need to do this, It is just a few less things for me to change. What is the downside to having an oversized throttle body if it is not needed? Loss of hp/tq or both? The first time I went to the track, I had headers, .040 overbore, 3.73's, flows, and the CAI. I ran a 14.8@around 93mph, I think. This past time, after all that is listed, I only knocked off .2 sec and gained no mph, could this be part of the problem? Also, what effect woult it have if one of the sensors in my mass air looks fried? Would it even run if it was, or would it just not run to its full potential? Thanks for the replies. Also, the first time I went to the track, I was shifting at about 6200 prm, last time it was about 5500 rpm.
USMC302 - His name was Corey. Are you from this area? |
you have a stock mass air meter?then there is no need for the TB now..you are putting air threw a 58/60mm hole then up to a 70mm..no point..you are loosing velocity..
now if you told me you hade a 72mm+ mass air and a 70mm TB then if anything at the track(with your combo)your et would of went down and your MPH would be the same or up 1 or 2 |
Yes, the maf is stock. I plan on upgrading soon. I'm going to probably go with a 73mm or 76mm. I want to go to 24# injectors. I know that the 19# injectors are good to about 300 hp, but I figure I might as well do it now in anticipation of future mods.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the opening in the stock maf only about 40mm? It doesn't look like it is as big as the stock TB. Are the stock TB's 58mm?

That's a good deal and an intake can't really go bad unless it was warped upon installation (very unlikely). Stock throttle body on mass air cars is 60mm. Stock mass air is 58mm I believe. I would leave the stock throttle body, but change the mass air. If you want to do injectors, it's overkill now, but with a head/cam swap later it will be necessary. Plan your mods!

From Orange, so you pretty much live in Baytown if you race mustangs in that area. Don't know a Corey though, good luck to you

The $250 is a "good" price on a Cobra intake. GET IT!
Had one on my stock motored (ok, so I also added an S-trim later), but liked the difference even with stock EVERYTHING and still pulled 237rwhp (mind you STOCK). With S-trim it went 335rwhp. Now I run the TFS intake/heads/cam for (undynoed) 440rwhp? |
I think I'm going to call the guy this weekend and set up asomething to get it. About how much of a power gain can I expect to see with the cobra intake and a set of gt40p heads off of and explorer? Thanksfor the replies.
