late model 460 questions

I'm trying to build a 460 efi motor for my 67 ranchero, and having some trouble getting info on it. I know the heads are diff, and the intake and exaust ports don't line up with the old stuff, but thats it. Does it use the same block? Can I bore it out the same, as in, alot? are the pistons the same? What do the heads CC at? Any other wierd things I should know? Also trying to build for the posibility of a turbo addition at a later date. That means 8:1 forged pistons, can't seem to find any. A little help would be good. I have a 460 efi core out of a 92 F350. Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about those motors but you might try www.ford-trucks.com/ and see what you can come up with there on their forums.

Hey Gofast. I know there are some differences in the blocks from say the 70-72 range and up. In 1970 Ford had a factory rated 365 horse 460 just because of the heads, DOVE heads. Which is what I'd say the biggest majority or people running non aftermarket aluminum heads are running. Some also call the DOVE heads Cobra Jet heads. Same head, just different names. I will also say, ( and unfortuneatly I dont have documentation ot back it up) that a man could take an engine like you have as a core, Build a good short strong block use the Fuelk Injected heads ( with welding up injector bungs and an adapter for a carb ) and make some serious power. These heads will outflow ANY aftermarket big block head that is available to the public (i.e. Blue Thunder, Cobra Jet etc. etc, Cast or aluminum) I have been called a liar many time by this statement, But without documentation noone can prove anything, Im still looking for flow numbers to prove it to a few. I am just going by what ive been told by SEVERAL Knowledgeable big block mechanics.

As far as 8:1 compression pistons, I dont know of any off the top of my head that are a shelf item from anyone but a custom set is possible, Call Lunati.. The newer blocks cant be bored as much unfortuneatly, I think .090 or .110 is as much as you should go without worrying about cooling issues and hardblock.

Hope this helps ya in some way.

I thought the D0VE head had smaller ports. Than the D00E Cobra Jet heads. I have a set of DOVE's and they cannot pass the four finger test. I paid 300 for the D0VE's.

The CJ head ports are too big for the street. Actually any 460/429 head works great for the street. The Aluminum head weighs 40 less lbs though.

The 460 is a thin wall casting block. I never went over 20 for the street.

As Pony says, Id get some D0VE's,, if you can find some. I dont know whos makes a EFI manifold that fits them though. Seems like the heads changed in the mid 80's.

Thanks alot for the info guys. I plan on keeping the fuelie heads, I've heard the same thing, they flow like gangbusters. This will also be fuel injected. The only real consern right now is the pistons. I know I should just take the core apart and cc the heads, I was just hoping someone would know. I'm now going to sell the ranchero, have baby on the way, and a two seater just doesn't cut it. I'm planning on replacing it with a 66 merc comet wagon, and do all this to that. Its the same car underneath, with alot more room. Soooo. if you have a decent shape comet wagon for sale, let me know. I'm also going to sell the mustang too. I'll post some pics on here soon.
