My cousin has a wrecked 96...but that tranny wont fit, correct? Also if ne1 lives in nj does ne1 know where i can get a used 1? Also if neone knows how much a used one should cost i got quoted for 1 thats 750...used. Thanks a lot fellas!

What is wrong with yours? I run a tremac 3550. I like it.
|
if i were you... i would just buy a tremec 3550 i got mine for less than 1500 with bellhousing. I love it
|
you could get a used t-5 outta a junk yard and put world class gears, ect....or the tremec 3550 doesn't sound bad.
|
I dont know about Texas but in N.C., You would be a real lucky person to find a T5 in the junk yard. Theyre getting scarce around here. Upgrade to the 3550 so you dont have to replace it again. At least for a while. Just my 2cents

Hey...I'm in NJ also, Middletown area. Where are you?
I just rebuilt my T5 about 3 months ago. Got all the parts from Hanlon Motorsports. It was a lot of fun, you just need patience, time and a good set of tools. If you want to do it I could help you out, or you could have Hanlon (hanlonmotorsports.com) rebuild it. I think they charge around $200+parts. You could even drive it out there (Hanlon is in PA, roughly 2 hours from me). If yours is as bad as mine, expect to spend a lot on new parts. What are the symptoms you're seeing? Grinding? Won't stay in gear? Whining? Low fluid? Let me know....I'm interested in working on another one. Later, Rich |
well my symptoms are that it only goes into fourth gear. every other gear it goes into smoothly, but it wont go at all, it just revs even with the clutch out. Im near flemington nj rich. Yeah im looking to get a used one cause a new one is gunna be alot of $$$. Ne1 know if a 96 tranny fits a 88?
Does anyone know of any junk yards around flemington area i could call? I called one but they couldbnt find me 1.... thanks fellas |
I can't tell you if the 96 tranny will fit in or not, but I live in Flemington. Have you tried Pro Auto Recyclers on Rt 202 across from Dave's Autobody? They could probably find one for you. I'll ask around and see if anyone I know has one they want to get rid of.

Hey 88stangNJ,
From what I see on Ebay Motors, 96 models came with the T-45 which I don't think will fit on a 5.0. I know exactly what your problem is. The main gear on the cluster or input shaft is blown. What's your fluid level like? Here's what you'll need if you were to fix it: (Part numbers from Hanlon Motorsports) Input Shaft P/N HMS085025 $98.34 052 Cluster Gear P/N HMS077052 $173.95 -or- 068 Cluster Kit P/N HMS410003 $279.00 ---Includes 068 Cluster Gear, 2nd and 3rd Gears. Separately they are $198.96, $82.38 and $83.09. Basically you would be getting one of the gears free. Plus the 2nd and 3rd ratios are improved. Plus a rebuild kit (syncros, bearings, seals), if you want to go that far. That adds $169.95. If not, I would recommend at least a refresh kit (syncros only)($89.95). So you're looking at anywhere from $272.29 to $547.29 to fix it (yourself). I'll be off work from Nov29 - Dec6 (except Dec4) and I'd be glad to give you a hand with fixing it. E-mail me at richdooz@comcast.net if you're interested. Rich D. |
Dude , just check the classifieds. There are tons of mustang message boards with classified sections.
Stangnet has a large section. I'm positive you'll find something on there. |
I believe a t-45 will fit a 302 with a differnt bellhousing. Dont buy a tremmec. There not any different than a t-5. I run a stock t-5 on my low 11 sec. car.
|
Bottlebaby, you are wrong my friend. Theres a big diff. in torque ratings. Are they low 11s in the 8th mile? Sorry, but you shouldnt mislead people with bogus posts.
|
What am I incorrect on? I run 11's in the 1/4 at over 115 mph on stock t-5.
|
Tremecs have a higher torque rating than any stock T5. I have many friends who just keep buying and keep breaking T5s like nothing. While some of them have finally(after wasting money on T5s) go to a tremec and theyre still driving. Lot less hassle. Anyway, thats what was incorrect, T5s are not a good thing for any modded stang, upgrade the engine= upgrade the tranny

I have have had no problems with the stock t-5 except putting new syncros in a year ago. I was wrong about the t-45 fitting 302's. Sorry about that, i was not thinking about what i was saying. I will now leave the correct info. Borg Warner T-45 transmissions are found in 1996 and later 4.6L V-8 single and dual over head cam Mustangs. The design is very much like the T-5 and T-56 transmissions. It has single rail gear selector and carbon lined steel synchro rings. The gears are stronger then a T-5. The bell housing is built into the main case so it can not bolt to other earlier bell housings found on Windsor blocks. T-45 from 96-98 GT are different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount point is moved further back on a Cobra T-45. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. T-45 shifters are the same as the T-5 shifter, therefore, any aftermarket shifter will work on both transmissions. Borg Warner T-5/T-45/T-56 all use ATF oil or Synthetic ATF. No other oil should be used. Redline MTL should not been used. Redline ATF is fine. My recommendation is to use Amsoil ATF as I have used it at the track with great results.
