Flywheel question
Will I be able to use a '91 flywheel from a '91 5.0 on a '74 351w or will I need a different harmonic balancer?
I think the weights are different after 1982 but I'm not sure. I want to be positive so I don't shake my engine apart. |
I'm not sure what the numbers are for the blancing but I do know this. Whatever your crank is machined for, you have to have the same weighted harmonic blancer and flywheel. My motor is machined balanced for a 28.2 oz crank. So I had to get a 28.2 oz flywheel and harmonic blanancer. Hope this helps ya out!

FWIW - if you purchase an aftermarket flywheel (like my Fidanza aluminum fly) they come with three different counter weights (50oz, 28oz, 0oz) so that you can easliy match it to your application.

Your best bet would be to get a new flywheel. While it is possible to get a matching balancer for your flywheel, it wouldn't have the timing mark in the correct location.

I could do that but I still don't know weight balancer I have on my '74 351w. I wouldn't know what flywheel to buy.

All 351W use an imbalance of 28 ounces. Make sure your new flywheel is for a 351, and not a 302. The 351 has 164 teeth, and the 302 has 157.

Isn't the balancer keyed so that it can only go on ONE way? That's the way mine is. So wouldn't the timing marks will be the same?.... |

What years(s) did Ford use the 0 and 50oz flywheels?
|
Ford never used a zero weight for the small blocks. All 5.0's through 1979, and all 351W's use the 28 ounce flywheel and balancer. All 5.0's from 1982 on used a 50 ounce flywheel, and a 34 ounce balancer (but everyone refers to that as a 50 ounce balancer so that people don't get confused. ). However, the size of many of the 351W and 5.0 28 ounce flywheels were different.
