Rebuilt Tranny = Piece of $#@% - Part II

Well, after all this work pulling the tranny out and reinstalling it twice I was hoping it would be done and have all these headaches behind me. But alas, I was dreaming I guess. Now the tranny won't stay in reverse and it grinds in 2nd gear.

I'm going to take it back to the shop in Indy and shove it up someone's @$$ and tell them if they don't get it right this time I'm going to demand a FULL refund on top of the $250 labor I am demanding now plus an additional $250 labor for having to pull it out again.

Anybody have a good Tremec for sale cheap?

Damn dude... I've seen some shitty rebuilds on T-5's before but your luck is one of the worst. I got my T-5 from D&D performance in MI, since a rebuild costs as much as a new one, hehe.

2FastLX 05-13-2001 06:58 PM

Yeah, it's great looking at my Stang up on blocks. And driving my wife's purple Neon around is starting to give me a complex. I feel like a flamer in that damn thing.

I guess owning the car for a year with 125,000+ miles on it and not having a single problem should have been a sign that sh!t was about to hit the fan and splatter everywhere.

And for what it is worth I don't think you are a flammer, well not yet anyway. LOL Man, you better get on them so you can have your car ready for saturday!! Good luck dude! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/cool.gif

Bob Hanlon is a nice guy and so is his wife, I just bought a good bit of my parts from him. When this T-5 dies which I hope isn't anytime soon I am going to have him build me a Badd A** Tremec.

Kevin, it really sucks to see you having this many problems, I would ask for a new tranny and ask them to take money off for all the labor you have put in it, I think that is only fair. If not you can ship it to me and I'll rebuild the damn thing. Do you know if Tim D. has gotten to the track yet? I used to talk to him a good bit but have lost contact with him since the move and I was bustin' A** on my car. Ask him to drop me a e-mail if you talk to him.

I can't afford another tranny at the moment. At least not unless I could get my money back from these %$#@ers. I'm driving the car to them this morning and let them see for themselves. Well, wish me luck guys. I'm driving the car to Indy busted tranny and all (70 miles). 2nd gear is toast, but the other gears should hold up fine right?

Well, I called the tranny shop and talked to them finally. The guy asked me if I was using the stock shifter and I told him I had a Pro 5.0. He then informed me that the aftermarket shifters tear up transmissions and I was like HUH?!

He also said shift forks don't bend in a T5. Hmm.

We got ourselves a winner boys!

spinemup 05-14-2001 12:06 PM

shifter forks do not bend..... they are cast aluminum. cast alum does not bend, it breaks.

you should have never said anything about the aftermarket shifter, anything not factory will give the trannyshop an excuse to say why it broke. just say everything was factory origional.

fiveohpatrol 05-14-2001 12:08 PM

im not a T-5 driver, but isnt one of the big reasons to get an aftermarket shifter to NOT tear up your tranny?

Well, I'm not too worried about them saying it's my fault now. The Ford dealer I took the tranny to initially is going to tell them to make good on this PLUS labor charges or they are pulling all of their business from them http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

Not to mention I didn't even get to move the car more than a foot before it jumped out of reverse. And after finally getting it out of my driveway and went for a drive it was grinding in 2nd gear and I was babying it.

I had similar agony with my T-5 the best advice is to have a reputable shop do the work for you. I still have a Piece of Crap T-5 in my garage that blew a $470 sized hole in my wallet, that simply will not shift into reverse and chatters in second. When my small claims case finally settles he will get a nice bill for triple damages and the cost to remove and replace the trans. Buyer beware I learned my lesson the hard way.
Now the previously screwed up trans I took out was rebuilt for $575 by a local shop and works great and I am happy now http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

The other trans awaits surgical implantaion in the ripoff artists bunghole http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif

I'm on my 3rd T-5!! I feel your pain! The stock one went at 102,000 miles racing a Vette at Moroso when I hit third gear... http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif Replaced it with a World class one and that went about 2 years later when the main shaft broke destroying the casing and all that good stuff! This one, I'm hoping will last a while!! Good luck, man!! We can sympathize!!

I dropped the tranny off yesterday and the guy that owned the place threw it up on a bench and had it apart in less than 2 minutes. He really looked like he knew what he was doing so I don't understand why I am having all these problems. He also mentioned that he put a heavy duty bearing retainer on it but it was still made out of aluminum. I thought the heavy duty ones were steel?

Well, he said they couldn't find a damn thing wrong with the tranny and they tore it completely apart and put it back together. I don't have very high hopes now. If I put it back in and it still grinds I'm taking it to the track anyway and throwing some slicks on it and thrashing this damn thing until the car won't move. He'll surely find something wrong with it then. Then I'm going to demand my tranny back that I had originally, $400 labor, $60 for gas driving back and forth to Lafayette and Indianapolis, $20 in tranny fluid, and more than likely court costs. I'm sick of this.

What makes it good though is if he doesn't make it good he'll lose all business with the Ford dealer in Lafayette which is a bunch.
