Poppin out of first

I recently noticed while startingout in first the car will pop out of first. Is this a sign of soon to be tranny failure? Or the clutch needing adjustment?

its either your shifter screw 2 far in not allowing you to put the cr all the way in first or its time to look for another tranny

Usually if it pops out while already in first it is not the clutch, but worn gears in the trans.

I'd say tranny

I've seen this happen most times because of bent shift fork(s). If you have the tranny rebuilt, be sure to replace the shift forks or you may find it happening again right after the rebuild.

What brand shifter do you have? When I first installed my Hurst it popped out of first one time and I just about went through the roof. BAM! that sound makes me very nervous. Maybe the stop needs to be backed off a 1/16 or so and tighten up the lever. I did those two things and it has never popped out again.

mine has done this, but only a couple times the whole year i been driving it, make sure you are putting it in gear all the way.

Jerm95gt 05-17-2001 03:54 PM

I've had it happen it my gt about twice...i've owned the car for around 4-5 months and it now has about 54k on it...i think sometimes you just don't get it in all the way........

Hey redbaron: I had that happen to me and it turned out to be the shifter boot had torn and was getting in the way of the shifter and causing it not to go all the way into gear. You might want to check that.

I would have to go with bent sift fork. If you get trany rebuilt make sure to buy new sifter. One that has possitive stop bolts on it. This will stop over travel of sift fork. I use the Pro 5.0. Not only will it help sift fork last longer 2nd to 3rd is a piece of cake. When the trany is put some Amsoil synthetic trans fuild in. Hope I could help.

i would say shift fork, because i've been there, and i've been in there, and rebuilt several of these, the small slipper on the end of the fork is all it takes fork this to happen. it gets crushed from those rough shifts and falls off, or the fork gets bent, either way get a new fork.

My rebuilt tranny was doing this as soon as I got it back from the rebuilder so I took it back and he said there was nothing wrong with it after examining the gears. I watched him take it apart when I took it back and he never even examined the shift forks. After putting it back in it still jumped out of gear. I'm going to take it to another shop and see if it is the shift forks because we think that is the problem.

I'll bet it's the synchros. Find a used tranny at a junkyard, 83-93 T-5 will work. It'll cost less than a complete teardown and rebuild.

It could also be your detent ball on your shift rail.( internal ) The main reason for these detents is to stop the rtans from popping out of gear.
